Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.

Honestly, you must take us all for idiots that come here. Alright, I'll play along: Yes, I've already gone through all the Win 8.1 settings & tweaked and adjusted all of the taskbar and navigation settings as much as Win8.1 has available before coming here (within the first 15 minutes of initial boot, in fact). And while most we're already set to what you listed on the registry editor I did add the "disable charms hint" modification, for whatever that's worth. However, I didn't notice any change.
In addition to the RST service no longer running since the 8.1 update (Yes, I know I need to re-install the drivers), I also have problems now with the keyboard no longer having the same sensitivity settings, while not picking up what I am typing unless I pound hard on the keys now. , and sometimes that doesn't even work, and nothing shows up. (What's that about now??)
And I know you don't want to hear it, but 'Yes' I do concur with all of the others that said it; Win 8 & Win 8.1 sux, and I can tell you it only holds a special place n my heart second only to Vista! Seriously, what's wrong with you people over there at MS? Why "fix" something that's NOT broken? Win7 was great!! Shoot, I might as well go back to my old less expensive laptop running on Win7; I'm starting to appreciate the efficiency of it now!
