Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
And, yes, there is intelligence in the Charms Bar. It provides quick & easy access to functions that go with whatever is on the screen at the time; it is dedicated which makes it a great tool.. It makes things handy (convenient) & simple... a nice 'hub' for activities & tasks associated w/ whatever one has in front of them at any given time.
Well, I, for one, love it & I know many, many others who do, as well. Took me no time at all to "adjust" to it. And I can have others enjoying it in a matter of a very, very, few minutes; all my clients think it's great. I, also, write in 4 other tech forums and one can find tons of praise & good, positive things being said about Win8; as there should be.
As for APPs, the use of them is 100% optional; as is the use of the Start screen. Some are useful, some are just fun but, none are required or obligatory. Win8, still, has the good ole Desktop; which, by the way, is where I spend 100% of my time AND I find & access everything from there w/out ever changing screens.
8 is both better & easier than any prior Windows. It is far less trouble to navigate, performance is better and its many cool Features surpass anything before it.
I would be glad to give you some tips, cool tricks & guidance such that you can enjoy using this excellent OS and appreciate it rather than, admonish it.
