Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
I shouldn't have to use additional programs to get these things. I should not have to pay extra fees, monthly, or one time rates, to have the computer work the way it should have out of the box.
There are many reasons I hate Windows 8. That just happens to be one of the biggest ones. I don't like that the only way I can find my control panel is if I click on my desk top to change those settings, and then jump to the control panel once that is open. I don't like that it didn't start out with a start button where I am used to it being and that 8.1 is unable to complete the install in order so that I have it now. I don't like the folders icon on my taskbar that I cannot seem to delete. I don't like that I can only randomly find the "My Computer" section when I am lucky. I don't like that I had to modify my computer so that I did not have to have a password when I want to use my computer. Those are things that I should be able to add fluidly, **if I want them**, not because windows has decided what is best about the security level I need or the ability I have to navigate my computer. The charms bar is an annoyance. The start button did everything I wanted, and now I can't even get it on my computer!
Worst. OS. Ever!
