Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.

to; you can use a free utility like ClassicShell, or do as I do, and
choose to not worry about paying the small sum of $4.99 US for Start8.
While being able to install third party software could solve the issues we are having with windows 8, it does not solve the issue that we have to do it in the first place. We should not have to "fix" these issues ourselves. Windows 8 does absolutely nothing for me. I bought a laptop brand new with Windows 8 (LOVED Windows 7!) and very first night I could not figure out how to get anywhere I needed to go, accessibility should not be an issue when dealing with Windows. They should have given us an option as to having the start button or not. I contacted support the night I bought my laptop and was told then that I could have a start button but did you also know that installing third party software can void any warranties on your pc? I should not have to look for an "app" for a laptop I paid good money on to be able to do the things I need to do. That's not my job and not what I paid for. I have now had this laptop for 2.5 years (I stupidly kept it and didn't return it because the tech told me it could be JUST LIKE WINDOWS 7. lies lies lies). It's been nothing but headaches dealing with Windows 8 and I hope Microsoft is reading this because they should know this is bad publicity because not only am I posting here on how bad Windows 8 is, but on FB and anywhere else when I get frustrated and I am NOT alone. Next laptop I get will either be windows 7 or an Apple (I hear they like making things user friendly). Too much **** on Windows 8 that I don't use and don't need.
