Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
While I thoroughly dislike Windows 8 set up, it is hardly a reason to resort to violence via "butt kicking." Except in self-defense, when no other options are present, one should be able to resolve conflict or dissatisfaction in non-physical ways.
Yes. Others subscribed to this conversation and other conversations would have received an email concerning that SPAM POST that was added to (and obviously removed from) this conversation (as well as others) last night (from my point of view.)
It it was not from Microsoft nor was it an actual factual response to this conversation or the others that it was tacked onto. It was/is SPAM. It is a disadvantage of a public forum such as these that send email notifications to people when there is a response to a conversation they subscribed to email notifications for. Nothing more.
You're adding fuel to a fire due to spam message you received; not an actual suggestion. It was not legitimate and should not be considered legitimate by you or anyone else who received it because they are subscribed to this conversation or others that that got tacked onto by that SPAM via unscrupulous troublemakers.
I hope you understand what happened now. I personally have received that particular reply TWICE due to being subscribed to two of the conversations it happened to get added to (and later removed by moderators.)
One read through it and it becomes fairly obvious it is like any other SPAM one might get. Misspellings (linlk ?!) and horrible sentence structure/English skills. Read it out loud, it's kind of ridiculously bad. Heh. You'd think that SPAMMERS must do this type of thing on purpose - given they should have spell and grammar checkers at the very least by now. I had to undo the change to "linlk" several times on my iPad to even post this!
