What is causing my videos to be choppy and flicker?

I have created numerous movie maker projects without any issue in the past.  Yesterday I created a project which includes both photos and video clips.  Everything played fine.  I saved the project in order that I could burn it to CD.  But once saved, the videos included in the project are choppy and flicker.  Did I miss some kind of change?  Can anyone help?

Thank you for the information above but I don't understand any of it.  I was running Movie Maker 2011 when my issue started.  One of your techs suggested I upgrade to Movie Maker 2012 and that only made things worse by causing all my previous projects that included videos to flicker as well.  I have no idea how to uninstall and reinstall anything and have no intention on trying unless I have very good step by step instructions.  And no one has ever given me any help in that way.  I am the only user on my laptop so don't understand why I would set up a 'new user account'.  I did check my resolution and it is set to 1366 X 768.

My question prior to your last response was to the user who said she was able to do an update that fixed her problem.  I just wanted to know the steps she took to fix her problem.

Hi Lynnette,

Sorry to hear you are still having the video problems.

Just wanted to let you know my video issues seem to be fixed with Windows Movie Maker.

I recently made a new project and short video.

When I opened Movie Maker, Windows Live 2012 automatically downloaded an update.

I let it run, and Movie Maker restarted when the update finished.

When I finished my movie project and saved it as a WMA video file it was totally fine.

No flickering or colour distortion like before.

This may not help you as my computer uses a Nvidia graphics card, and yours is Intel based.

I know its frustrating and you have probably heard this many times.

But have you run your Windows, and Intel updates recently?

To manually find and run Windows Update on your computer

Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update

Also try opening Movie Maker and see if it automatically runs the update like it did for me.

The Intel website will automatically detect what you need

    Hello,

    1.  My laptop model is PSC12C-03503L and serial number is 1B446816Q.

    2.  Yes my original videos taken directly from my video camera and saved to my laptop open and play correctly in Windows Media Player.

    3.  I found 3 videos less than 10 MB, saved them each into Movie Maker and now they flicker.  One was 8.24 MB, one was 6.38 MB and one was 7.30 MB.

    4.  The file types of the original videos are all Quick Time Movie (.MOV).

    5.  I did the Alt+F and then I and then selected Advanced.  The 'prepare file for faster editing' is checked off and I did see it work as I added the videos identified in my #3 above.

    Thank you again for your time.  I sure hope we can get this resolved soon.

    Hi Lynette,

    Thank you for your cooperation with this issue. There are several reasons on why the videos are showing choppiness and flickering. With this, I would like to isolate this issue further so we can really determine what is exactly causing this issue.

    First, after checking the log files, I have determined that your computer's video driver is outdated. I have read your previous post and saw that you are not able to update this. On your log files, I have seen that your computer model is a Toshiba Satellite C650. Since you can't find the drivers on the Toshiba website, we would like to know the exact model number or serial number of your computer (usually located on the back of your laptop) so we can direct you to the proper page where you can download the latest video drivers.

    Second, I would like to check if this is an issue with the video files that you are using. I understand that previously, you can play and edit these videos without any problem, but it would be better if we can properly isolate the cause of this first. With this, I would like to ask the following information:

    • Just to clarify, can you please determine if the original files (the unedited files before using it on Movie Maker) plays correctly in Windows Media Player?
    • What is the smallest video size that you are trying to edit on Movie Maker? Can you try to edit a video that is less than 10 MB?
    • What are the file types of the original videos? Does the issue happen if you are using other video file types?

    Lastly, I have checked that you are previously using the 2011 version of Movie Maker. The option Prepare files for faster editing is not available on that version, as Movie Maker optimizes the videos automatically. Since you recently update your Movie Maker to the latest version (2012), please check the option again as this should now be available. This should let the Movie Maker optimize the videos so it will be smooth during editing.

    Hello Glenda,

    To answer the question in your first paragraph above, until yesterday when I did the Uninstall and Reinstall, my videos played smoothly (correctly) in my Move Maker projects all the time (before and after I saved the project).  Now that I did the Uninstall and Reinstall, the vidoes in my new Movie Maker project continue to be choppy/shaky/jittery as well as all the videos in my previously saved Movie Maker projects are now choppy/shaky/jittery.  That never happened before the Uninstall/Reinstall. The videos only became choppy once saved in .wmv format for Windows Media Player and then, of course, when/if I burned the Windows Media Player file to CD. 

    With regard to your second papagraph above, I will send the new logs later today.
