windows phone 8 failed update, sad face appears. How to fix it?

I wanted to update my wp8, but it failed, a sad face appeared. I tried to restart, but the sad face appears every time. What can I do????

Try this :D

Turn off the phone, Once the phone is off, Hold the Volume down key then plug the charger (charger should be connected to the power source ",) Once you see the excalmation ( ! ), remove your finger from the button.

Then press the following keys in, Volume Up, Volume Down, Power Key and Volume down. The phone will turn on automatically, this may take several minutes and it will show two gears that are spinning just wait for it to finish.

One more thing all the files on the phone will be deleted but if you have a microsoft account on the phone, check people.live.com to check the contact lists that you have and skydrive for the pictures, that's if you have a microsoft account on the phone.

    Thank you, FirstOneVorlon - I also have a 1520 that was stuck in that :-( death loop.   I installed the recovery tool, waited for the update, then forced a reboot out of the loop by holding volume down and power, and hit "try again" in the recovery app when the nokia logo appeared on the phone.    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/profile/7a8a38bd-24a9-449e-b230-311933439f0a

    OK, I know this post is a little old but I was having the same problem with my 1520 and I was able to reflash using Windows Phone Recovery Tool (download it from Microsoft directly, just do a bing search).

    The phone was restarting, the two gears spinning for a while and then the sad face.

    I installed Windows Phone Recovery Tool, it did not find the phone at first.

    After leaving the program opened for a while and the phone plugged to the PC, the software said it found the latest version on the server and that it was ready to download. I accepted the download and waited.

    With the download ready, the software was telling me it was unable to find the phone. I insisted on the retry button while the phone was going through the loop (gears, sad face, boot with Nokia logo and repeating it all over again). While on the Nokia logo screen the software was able to communicate with the phone and immediately started flashing it, breaking out of the loop.

    That worked just fine for me.

    Regarding files on your phone, if it supports a MicroSD card, I strongly suggest you configure your phone to write all media to the MicroSD, or to enable automatic upload to Onedrive. Those two actions can save you a lot of trouble if your phone dies on you.

    I was able to follow these directions for my Nokia Lumia Icon and it finally worked. I didn't have to send it in.
