Apparently there is a huge problem with **** font rendering in Windows 8. Text appears very blurry. Programs affected by the new rendering are: Internet Explorer 10, the modern interface (start screen), Office 2013 and other 3rd party applications that rely on this rendering technology. There is no way to fix this problem, unless Microsoft recognizes it.

It seems improbable Microsoft is unaware of this, since it affects most of their new products. I'd think it's one more attempt to drift users away from the Desktop, pre-Windows 8 environment to the tablet/phone era. I really hope Microsoft proves me wrong and fixes this incomprehensible, and quite serious issue.
It's not just IE that has the problem. Ironically, I read this post in Windows Mail as that's how I'm following it, and I could hardly read it due to the poorly rendered text!

I have the exact same problem.
New PC using IE 10 in Windows 8 Pro and the fonts are blurry. It is TERRIBLE
Have tried adjusting all settings, no difference
Same pages look perfect in Firefox, Chrome, etc
Microsoft - why are you not fixing this problem? I am not using IE until you sort this mess out

I agree. I just got Office 2013 and it's blurry as **** to the point where I can't type anymore and I spend all day in Work and Outlook. Office 2010 is nice and smooth. But I did have an interesting observation today when installed Office 2013 for a friend. I went up to his office and, to my great surprise, he had an old-school CRT monitor running on Windows 8 (his LCD broke). The resolution was, I believe, 1200 x 800. After installation, I fired up both Word and Outlook and everything, the text and icons, looked smooth like butter. Why? Also, I played with Surface Pro over the weekend, which is full HD, and Office looked smooth as well, unlike Surface RT. MS better fix this problem. Office 2013 is great but the text rendering makes it unusable.
CRTs don't need font smoothing. It's one of the benefits I've always loved about them. Surface RT has low pixel density hence the font issue being present (RT = 148, Surface pro = 208).
I too hate Office 2013's rendering. It's just inept. No options to control it and hardcoded into the entire suite. I bring that up because the new look of Office 2013, I could see Stardock or somebody coming out with an add on to make it look like 2007/2010, but there's no way somebody could skin away the font rendering.
