Poor font rendering in Windows 8 (blurry text)

Apparently there is a huge problem with **** font rendering in Windows 8. Text appears very blurry. Programs affected by the new rendering are: Internet Explorer 10, the modern interface (start screen), Office 2013 and other 3rd party applications that rely on this rendering technology. There is no way to fix this problem, unless Microsoft recognizes it.

    Did you happen to install your graphics driver(s) after you installed Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Preview?  My fonts were awful after the upgrade until I installed the correct drivers.

    I think it's not just different antialiasing method, it's way worse: individual characters in fonts are no longer aligned to the pixel grid! Instead, what we now got with Windows 8 is similar to Apple OS X-style font rendering, which looks VERY ugly on low DPI screens.

    And by the looks of it, the situation is not going to improve, in fact, I would expect the entire user interface to adopt the same rendering method very soon.

    I cannot see any improvement in IE11.

    The text is still blurry.

    You are right.  However, I thought IE's text was fuzzier, and the Device Manager's text was nearly un-readable, where it used to be clear.  I had an NVidia graphics driver with Windows 8, and I think it may have been removed with the upgrade.  This may be the cause of my problems.  I will look into it, and respond if it helps.

    I have come to the same conclusion you did.

    Office 2013 definitely shows a marked improvement with Windows 8.1. They are still using the greyscale antialiasing and it still does not look quite as sharp as Office 2010. However, it is indeed much better and certainly usable now. The metro apps and IE11 also look much better. Not sure what they did to make it look better but I think you all will be pleasantly surprised. I'll be interested to see if anyone else notices an improvement with Windows 8.1.
