"Apple Mobile Device" failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.. then options to retry, abort or continue without installing component

After using this computer for 7 months (bought it new last November) and iTunes worked perfectly well until one day it stopped displaying the device option( the one that shows what iPhone or I pad..etc you got connected) and then you can sync the devices. but this went missing and iTunes could not re-download it. 

I have contacted Apple support and gone through all options to remove and re-download iTunes.. but didn't' work. Each time, after downloading most of the programme - it stops to give the following message:

iTunes: Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

Please help

    After 4 full days of trying other stuff, this finally worked for me.  The web page says “iTunes installer for Windows XP/Vista 64 bit systems..” and I am on Windows 7 64-bit, so I hadn’t tried it.   I tried several other old versions for Windows 7 with no joy. 

    Of course, this means you can never upgrade iTunes or you risk breaking it.

    Remember, Apple Store constantly wants to upgrade to the latest iTunes.  You must be vigilant and prevent that.

    You won’t have the benefits of later iTunes releases, such as security patches.

    The problem is we don’t know what the root problem is, nor have the ability to find out.

    I followed your steps.  I did a clean boot at step 3, starting only the Microsoft services.  I disabled Norton.

    I also previously installed .NET Framework 4.6, made sure I had all Microsoft patches installed, run CCleaner to delete unused files and clean up the registry, uninstalled QuickTime 7, extracting the iTunes components and installing them manually (the log file for AMDS is 4,525 lines long and written in Greek), and sacrificed a chicken.

    No errors during the install, which is unusual; I usually get Error 7:  Abort, Retry, Fail?.  (A little MS DOS humor}

    I plugged in my iPhone when Finish was displayed. No device installer window was displayed.

    I waited 2 minutes and pressed Finish.

    Two messages were displayed, one on top of the other:

    “iTunes was not installed correctly.  Error 7”

    “iTunes was not installed correctly.  Error 7 (Windows error 193)”

    I had hopes for this.  It's the first time I saw the "plug in the device" idea.  No joy, alas.
