"Apple Mobile Device" failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.. then options to retry, abort or continue without installing component

After using this computer for 7 months (bought it new last November) and iTunes worked perfectly well until one day it stopped displaying the device option( the one that shows what iPhone or I pad..etc you got connected) and then you can sync the devices. but this went missing and iTunes could not re-download it. 

I have contacted Apple support and gone through all options to remove and re-download iTunes.. but didn't' work. Each time, after downloading most of the programme - it stops to give the following message:

iTunes: Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

Please help

    I have now tried this several times as well as various other suggestions found on the web.  Any other suggestions?  Anyone else still having this problem?  I am so frustrated that Apple does not talk to Microsoft better than this!!!!

    After a frustrating afternoon of trying to get iTunes to update at all, never mind sync with my iPhone, I would like to thank everyone who has posted a helpful comment on this and other threads.  With your knowledge I have now finally got the latest version of iTunes onto my laptop successfully, although I still can't sync my phone.  I must have only installed, uninstalled and reinstalled everything about six times! And I only needed to do it in the first place because my iPhone 3GS is so full that I can't get iOS6 on it in the first place, and I wanted to empty some files off it!!

    I now do not appear to have Apple Mobile Device installed on my PC at all, despite following everyones instructions to the letter, and also when I plug my phone in I am told I need iTunes 64 bit, despite that being what I have!!  I think Apple are taking the proverbial if they expect everyone to go through what I have today, and their own support for any of the problems I've experienced today has been shocking.  I am seriously tempted not to even bother with a new iPhone at all now.
