I had this problem with a Gateway I3 4 gig. I found that when the touchpad locked up Taskmanager was reporting that the HardDrive was running at 100 percent. If you phrase a search using "hard drive 100 percent", you will find that this is a problem
with 8 also. System (more so the kernal) is seeming to cause this.
I believe I have fixed it by changing the settings for page fault.
Search for "manage computer" you can find the old "system properties" window (why is this stuff so hard to find in 8?) Under Advanced is the "performance settings" button. Under that button is the "virtual memory Change" button. Finally uncheck the manage
paging file for all drives (my laptop only has one drive one paging file) select system managed size. Reboot.
I have been running for 2 days now and everything is faster - there have been no freezes.
