Unknown Device - USB error Code 43

Dell XPS m1330 running Win7 Pro 32-bit, service pack 1.

I have had this problem seemingly forever but have been ignoring it, as it doesn't seem to affect the performance of my laptop, but now I'm wondering why it has happened.

I have 7 Intel ICH8 host controllers, a Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse driver, USB Composite Device, USB Mass Storage Device and 7 USB Root Hubs that all seem to work fine, I have no problems using any devices I plug in to the machine, but there is an Unknown Device, with no hardware/device details available, reporting a Code 43.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the USB drivers, didn't help, in fact it made it worse as it seems to have lost my fingerprint reader (the reader is installed but apparently not connected to anything). There are no new driver updates. I have no idea what the Unknown Device is referring to, other than Port#0002 Hub#0001.

As I said, all external USB ports work fine, and until I tried fixing it, the Fingerprint reader was fine as well, I don't know what else should be on USB, so don't know what to fix.

Any help?

Chris

Hey guys, I just spent two weeks with the annoying USB connected error, accompanied by a ghost USB device in Device Manager that would just not go away. I tried registry hacks, uninstalling/updating/disabling the drivers etc. I didn't go as far as reformatting or re-installing Windows because from what I read that never seemed to help. Also unplugging my computer and letting it drain of power didn't fix the issue either.

What DID solve my USB woes was the Windows 7 "HotFix". It's basically a hotfix for USB problems on W7. It's litterally the only thing that fixed this issue- so if you've got this problem look no further.

You can download the (x64) HotFix here:

    http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?showtopic=17961

I'm sure the hotfix is available for x32 as well. The name of the hotfix is "Windows6.1-KB2528984-v2-x64" if you need to further search it.

    Hope it helps!

I have the same errors with my USB.

I made sure all my windows updates are current.

I've tried to update drivers, with the same errors.

    My USB reads:

    Hardware Ids:

    USB\UNKNOWN

I've tried uninstalling all USB RootHubs and draining the power.

I installed the Windows 7 64-bit HotFix posted. Rebooted.

    Still no fix!

    Hello,

    try the following:

      • Remove all usb root hubs
      • Restart
      • Scoring devices not installed (likely to be the bluetooth)
      • Download drivers for
      • Enjoy

if you can, send a photo of the screen, in the case of not working ...

    I hope everything goes well

Endless hours were spent trying to connect my Motorola Razr to my computer. This finally worked:

Go to Google Playstore on the phone. Download Motorola PIM (all upper case).

If you have an extended battery case/charger on the phone, remove the phone and insert the USB cable into the port on the top of the phone.

    Or

    Download “Airdroid” and connect wirelessly.

I had a Seagate USB backup drive fail and Windows (Windows 8.1-64) absolutely refused to accept that it was never going to be connected again and kept trying to connect to the device and giving me an  "unknown usb device (port reset failed)/ error code 43" error in device manager, and when I tried just uninstalling it it would always reappear. Since I was unable to find a way to make it stop I opened a program I had downloaded a long time ago, USBDeviceview (free at http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb\_devices\_view.html), and it allowed me to tell windows the device was disconnected. All I had to do was find the device in the list, right click on it and select disconnect device (apparently the f9 key would do the same thing after clicking on/selecting the device). What ever you do don't accidentally disconnect your mouse or keyboard or you'll be scrambling to unplug and replug its cable to get Windows to recognize it again!

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the hubs, but all that did for me was make my mouse and keyboard stop working and make it very hard to reboot (finally had to do a hard reset with the power button). And then when all was "said and done" after that disaster the device and error reappeared.
