Unknown Device - USB error Code 43

Dell XPS m1330 running Win7 Pro 32-bit, service pack 1.

I have had this problem seemingly forever but have been ignoring it, as it doesn't seem to affect the performance of my laptop, but now I'm wondering why it has happened.

I have 7 Intel ICH8 host controllers, a Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse driver, USB Composite Device, USB Mass Storage Device and 7 USB Root Hubs that all seem to work fine, I have no problems using any devices I plug in to the machine, but there is an Unknown Device, with no hardware/device details available, reporting a Code 43.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the USB drivers, didn't help, in fact it made it worse as it seems to have lost my fingerprint reader (the reader is installed but apparently not connected to anything). There are no new driver updates. I have no idea what the Unknown Device is referring to, other than Port#0002 Hub#0001.

As I said, all external USB ports work fine, and until I tried fixing it, the Fingerprint reader was fine as well, I don't know what else should be on USB, so don't know what to fix.

Any help?

Chris

There is a simple and easy solution for this conflict no matter which device is giving you the problem or if is even all devices including Microsoft ones.

    Steps:

    Start

    Computer

Right click on it and scroll down to Properties

Upper left hand corner click on Device Manager

New window will open of Device Manager

Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Expand it by clicking on the forward arrow key if it is not expanded

Scrolldown to the USB Device with the Exclamation mark on it in the yellow triangle

Right click on it and click Uninstall

    Next select USB Root Hub

Right click on it and click Uninstall

Do that for all the USB Root Hub that are there

After they are all uninstalled, shut down your computer completely.  Pull out power cord and if it has a battery then remove it.  Press the Power button for a few seconds to drain any power left in the system.  Wait 5 minutes and reinstall the battery, Plug in the Power cord and restart the computer.

Once you get full boot, go to www.microsoft .com and select downloads and then select Microsoft Update.  Minimise the page.

Next plug in your USB device and let Windows download the drivers automatically for the device.  It should work fine.

    Enjoy being headache free!

    USB/UNKNOWN

Go to the device manager and right click on the unknown device.

    Select Properties

    Select the Details Tab

From the Properties Pulldown menu, select Hardware ID's

    It should be something like

    "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1503&SUBSYS_E0001458&REV_05"

    Post the result here.

I have exactly the same problem.

I am using Win 7 Ultimate, some of the info is a little different, because I am on a gateway.

Has no one figured out a solution for this problem as yet.

It's been annoying me for over a year.

I have the exact same problem and the EXACT same details as Eskimo9 when I looked!  (And I tried the useless uninstall BS advice already)

    Hardware Ids:

    USB\UNKNOWN

    Compatible Ids

    USB\UNKNOWN

    Device Class

    USB

    Device Class GUID

    {36fc9e60-c465-11cf-8056-444553540000}

    Driver Key

    {36fc9e60-c465-11cf-8056-444553540000}\0015

    EVERYTHING is the same but I'm not on a Dell.  It's a custom-built with a Sabertooth board. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU960  @ 3.20GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.2GHz

So got any bright ideas why we're seeing the EXACT SAME details?   I can't help notice you haven't replied with any kind of advice for over two months.
