Unknown Device - USB error Code 43

Dell XPS m1330 running Win7 Pro 32-bit, service pack 1.

I have had this problem seemingly forever but have been ignoring it, as it doesn't seem to affect the performance of my laptop, but now I'm wondering why it has happened.

I have 7 Intel ICH8 host controllers, a Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse driver, USB Composite Device, USB Mass Storage Device and 7 USB Root Hubs that all seem to work fine, I have no problems using any devices I plug in to the machine, but there is an Unknown Device, with no hardware/device details available, reporting a Code 43.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the USB drivers, didn't help, in fact it made it worse as it seems to have lost my fingerprint reader (the reader is installed but apparently not connected to anything). There are no new driver updates. I have no idea what the Unknown Device is referring to, other than Port#0002 Hub#0001.

As I said, all external USB ports work fine, and until I tried fixing it, the Fingerprint reader was fine as well, I don't know what else should be on USB, so don't know what to fix.

Any help?

Chris

I recognize that this is an old thread, but having encountered and resolved this for my machine, I thought it might help

I was getting an unknown device in Device Manager, which prevented me from using my USB mouse. One would think that the mouse was the problem, but no, replacing the mouse did not fix it.

here's all I had to do:

    1. power down
    2. unplug power supply
    3. hold power button for 20 seconds (we called this draining the flea power, what it does is clear some of the information that the bios stores between boots)

plug back in and power on.

After this my original mouse installed no problem. The problem has reoccurred since then, and I think I've tracked it down to using the USB ports to charge a bluetooth headset: perhaps rebooting while the headset was connected messed up the bios device information. Any how, hope this helps someone else.

I have M1530, after having the same issue for sometime, I tried to remove and refresh the device drivers one more time and windows finally picked up the following:

Dell Wireless 400 Wireless USB Mini-card

If windows does not find it online, you can download it from DELL website:

Type Device Manager in the Search box above the Start button and press ENTER. Locate and right click on the device and click on Uninstall in the drop down list. Restart your computer. Does it reappear in Device Manager?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? If yes what is the Device Error code.
