"Your organization's policies are preventing us from completing this action for you. For more info, please contact your help desk."

Well, I AM my help desk as this is my personal laptop. I'm not sure what I did to have this get set up somewhere, the only things I've ever messed with were the OEM Background picture when logging on and to disable the autorun features to prevent installation of malware from infected usb drives that I interact with on campus frequently giving me enough time to scan them before activating them.

I tried going back into the registry and setting the policy for autorun to be unconfigured again as it was default and it didn't fix the problem.

I get that error message when using various MS Office products, 2010 and 2013, when trying to go to an external link in a document/program or when trying to hyperlink within a document (e.g. Table of Contents --> Page 23...) But I know it isn't specifically office, or at least I think.

Thoughts on what I can do?

If you received this error after uninstalling any application that takes over the HTML open command (including, but not limited to, Chrome & Firefox browsers) you may also need to change the HTM/HTML association in the registry.

    1. Start, click Run, type Regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes.html
    3. Right click the value for the .html key and select Modify…
    4. Change the value from “ChromeHTML” to “htmlfile” (or from FireFoxHTML to htmlfile)
    5. Repeat for .htm, shtml, .xht, .xhtml, .xhtm keys

Repeat these steps for htm and .shtml keys if they exist. You may also want to check the xhtml and xhtm keys. Don’t want to edit the registry? Download this file (right click and choose Save target as…) Then double click on the file to run. From After uninstalling Google Chrome Links in e-mail don’t work any more

    The download works well.

This fixed my issue as well. Although the culprit was Notepad++! Which I found strange..

    Thank you!

I too had this problem on a laptop running Windows 8 with Office 2013. I have to say the following regarding this issue...

Do all of us rememeber when Microsoft was threatened with lawsuits over "forcing" everyone to use Internet Explorer when it wasn't actually forced, it was just installed by default but anyone could install any browser they wanted with no side effects or issues? Why is Google being allowed to do this in a much more aggressive and detrimental way? I had a VAIO computer (that I loved other than this one issue) that I could never get to launch a link if I didnt have Chrome installed as my default browser. I had to go through three clicks to open a link from e-mail instead of one. I thought that was more than a bit intrusive but it was THEIR laptop (as it came OEM) so dealt with it for two years. Now, I am on a non-Sony computer and Chrome has still managed to hijack functinality? Why aren't we picthing a fit and making Google change this behavior? I am very careful about reading all the fine print and checkboxes with installations and would NEVER have authorized Chrome if it had been even slightly obvious as a choice or option, yet, all of  a sudden, this occured on my primary computer as well and "policy" is preventing me from using links at all.

If we don't want to use Chrome, we should be able to simply say "no thank you" and be done with it but for some reason, Google is, has been and continues to hijack our system settings with no simple resolution. It's been a documented practice for quite some time yet it continues. I'd recommmend everyone dealing with this issue send a polite but foreceful message to Google that they need to knock it off...they are losing more people than winning customers with this behavior, not to mention wasting our time and energy having to fix their unethical code. At least that is my expereince, frustration and opinions regarding it,  as it evidently isn't occurring on just OEM machines but now with other installs as well. Don't get me wrong....Google has done some remarkable things with their services, many of which  I enjoy very much and use, but recently they are taking over systems with no clear indication that is what they are going to do and with no simple recourse, despite our preferences. It is THAT behavior I don't appreciate.
