XP Home Edition will not boot anymore.  I get the XPWindows Logo when I boot

then shuts down to a blank screen with the following Error posted at the top of

the blank screen. 

Error:

NTLDR: FATAL ERROR 57344 READING BOOT.INI

Question:  What is this error and how do I correct it so I can get my XP Windows back.

    Yep, I have a Dell, still waiting for OP's make, and model and model number.

    I thought he had the Dell, but Elizabeth does!

    If I'm not mistaken, there is no regular XP installation CD. I believe he burned a bootable XP Recovery Console CD. I believe his Dell comes with a hidden restore partition on the hard drive.

    Actually, the OP did post the below indicating he had located the media.

    Some good news.  I have the XP Windows Home Edition Install Software. If and when I do the reinstall, what are the consequences such as losing everything if there was no backup.  Look forwad to your response.

    Liz has asked for the make and model of the system. The OP has yet to provide that information. I may be wrong but I would think the disc are recovery and that there is no recovery partition. I base this on the fact the system is Home and formatted for Fat32 file system. Most computers containing those characteristics are pre recovery partition era. I may be wrong though.

    As for the rootkit scanner from MBAM, I personally will use it only after I have used aswMBR simply because there is not an MBR option in Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit.

    On another note, something you may be interested in knowing is that MBAM has released a dedicated rootkit scanner entitled Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Be sure to read the instructions that come within the download. The download contains a file entitled fixdamage.exe which is separate from the scanner file. It will repair certain system services and settings which are frequently broken by certain rootkits such as the firewall, security center and others affected by malware. It is still in beta, but seems very promising.
