System Restore is no longer available.

When I go to "Start" / System Restore, dialog box appears " System Restore is no longer protecting your computer. Restart and try again." I have done that several and restarted, with always the same result. How can I enable SR again?

That was the only thing i have in my notes about the SR service and that error and I did recreate it one more time here to be sure my notes made sense.  I have that same error for other Services and it is usually a missing file, so usually easy to fix

Do you know if SR has worked properly since Avast has been installed?

Since your SR Service is broken, and if that is the only problem you know about, you could:

1.  Export the SR Service section of your registry and send it here for analysis

2.  I can export the SR Service part of my registry and send it to you for installation on your system.   I have instructions for that (the SR Service is not very exciting to look at)

3.  You can totally reinstall System Restore (you don't have to reinstall XP - just the SR part)

a.  I have instructions for that and you do not need an XP installation CD

b.  If you reinstall SR, you will lose all your current Restore Points

c.  If SR doesn't work anyway, who cares about number b

Even though Avast is pretty good, I wish you would do this while you are thinking about it:

Download, install, update and do at least one full scan with these free malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM):  http://malwarebytes.org/

SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS):  http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

    Thanks for your response.  I am keen for your analysis of my data presented to you earlier.  Joselbarra may be right that this is a different issue, so it requires a different thread.

    I don't know how to transfer this to another thread, so I hope you could please do it for me and give me the link for me to attend to it.

    The subject could be :

    "My computer is sick"   -    as first priority.

    Second priority could be:

    Erratic and slow computer.

    I am keen for your analysis as per the data I have submitted to you earlier.

    896 mb of RAM is a reasonable amount for a Windows XP. However a Total of 1,099 mb and a Peak of 1,612 mb is indicating that your system demands for memory exceed the available RAM. If the figures you have provided are typical of what is happening most of the time, then you have a system that is over reliant on use of the pagefile. Reading and writing data to the pagefile is slower than to RAM memory. The result is that the computer becomes slower and less responsive.

    In your situation you can add RAM, reduce the demand for memory or live with a slow computer. Adding RAM to an older computer is feasible providing you get compatible RAM but many users would be reluctant to spend on an older computer. You may be obliged to live with a slow computer but as it does not cost money the best way forward is to try reduce the demand for RAM. This option often leads to better system performance but improvements may not be dramatic. Reducing demand can be about the choice of programmes and the way they are used. To take this forward can you please answer the following questions.

    What anti-virus software is installed?

    You have used Malwarebyes recently. Is this the free version?

    What anti-spyware is installed. You have used SuperAntiSpyware recently. What is the exact version? The latest version is 5.0.1142. The Program version is on the first page you open in SuperAntiSpyware.

    What internet browser are you using?

    What are the other main programmes you run?

    Your Disk Defragmenter report indicates that you must recently have dramatically reduced the number of files on the computer. You have a single pagefile indicating that you have fixed minimum = maximum setting. That's good. Plenty of free disk space also good.

    You have created a system restore point when the disk was badly fragmented. It is better to run Disk CleanUp or cCleaner (better than Disk CleanUp) and  Disk Defragmenter before you embark on significant downloads. This reduces the extent fragmentation can immediately occur. You cannot defragment system restore points. The only way is to remove them and create a new one when the free space on the disk / partition is minimal.
