System Restore is no longer available.

When I go to "Start" / System Restore, dialog box appears " System Restore is no longer protecting your computer. Restart and try again." I have done that several and restarted, with always the same result. How can I enable SR again?

That was the only thing i have in my notes about the SR service and that error and I did recreate it one more time here to be sure my notes made sense.  I have that same error for other Services and it is usually a missing file, so usually easy to fix

Do you know if SR has worked properly since Avast has been installed?

Since your SR Service is broken, and if that is the only problem you know about, you could:

1.  Export the SR Service section of your registry and send it here for analysis

2.  I can export the SR Service part of my registry and send it to you for installation on your system.   I have instructions for that (the SR Service is not very exciting to look at)

3.  You can totally reinstall System Restore (you don't have to reinstall XP - just the SR part)

a.  I have instructions for that and you do not need an XP installation CD

b.  If you reinstall SR, you will lose all your current Restore Points

c.  If SR doesn't work anyway, who cares about number b

Even though Avast is pretty good, I wish you would do this while you are thinking about it:

Download, install, update and do at least one full scan with these free malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM):  http://malwarebytes.org/

SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS):  http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

    I had actually been advised about three years back that more than one spyware should be used as they each look for different things in different areas. This is constantly verified in that the second anti=spyware done still finds some elements the first anti-spyware didn't.

    There shouldn't be any problem of overload since I only use one application at a time and no other applications will be open.

    Again in the case of the two browsers installed, I only use one at a time.

    So overall, what should I do to overcome my problems? We haven't got down to any debugging and making corrections. The problems remain.

    Anti spyware used every weekend is Ad-aware free (temporaryily uninstalled) and SuperAntiSpyware free version5.0.1142. .

    You do not need two. SuperAntiSpyware is what I use. It does seem to make heavy demands on memory even though the latest version, which you have, is supposed to have improvements to reduce demand.

    I used IE all my life and now use Firefox as well, as per Josel Barra's advise. It is running quite well.

    I cannot see the need for two browsers. Firefox has a history of memory leaks but I do not know the present situation. You can accumulate too many Add Ons and pruning these can help.

    Commit charge? Disk Defragmenter report?

    Ok then, we do not transfer to a new thread.

    I don't think I will add any more RAM as I plan to donate this laptop to charity when Windows 8 appears. I always donate our used equipments and clothes, handphones etc.

    My antivirus is Avast free version and it has always served me well. Anti spyware used every weekend is Ad-aware free (temporaryily uninstalled) and SuperAntiSpyware free version

    5.0.1142. These two are better than others that I have tried thru the years. Malwarebyes free is seldom used.

    I used IE all my life and now use Firefox as well, as per Josel Barra's advise. It is running quite well.

    I also do the cleanups and defrag every weekend.

    This computer has run for almost 6 years. It is only now that I'm seeing the mentioned problems. And thats another reason I won't add RAM considering that the computer has run well for so many years. I believe the problems are elsewhere.
