System Restore is no longer available.

When I go to "Start" / System Restore, dialog box appears " System Restore is no longer protecting your computer. Restart and try again." I have done that several and restarted, with always the same result. How can I enable SR again?

That was the only thing i have in my notes about the SR service and that error and I did recreate it one more time here to be sure my notes made sense.  I have that same error for other Services and it is usually a missing file, so usually easy to fix

Do you know if SR has worked properly since Avast has been installed?

Since your SR Service is broken, and if that is the only problem you know about, you could:

1.  Export the SR Service section of your registry and send it here for analysis

2.  I can export the SR Service part of my registry and send it to you for installation on your system.   I have instructions for that (the SR Service is not very exciting to look at)

3.  You can totally reinstall System Restore (you don't have to reinstall XP - just the SR part)

a.  I have instructions for that and you do not need an XP installation CD

b.  If you reinstall SR, you will lose all your current Restore Points

c.  If SR doesn't work anyway, who cares about number b

Even though Avast is pretty good, I wish you would do this while you are thinking about it:

Download, install, update and do at least one full scan with these free malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM):  http://malwarebytes.org/

SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS):  http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

    Downloaded it, but need an understanding. When I uncheck an item, it will no longer be in startup. Is it true that the system will turn it on when it is required? Meaning that it is still there and not on Auto but on Manual.

    I can't find this option. Where is it?

    At which stage of usage do I do the Defrag and Commit reports. Just after a restart or during normal usages. Shall I do a defrag first?

    Please provide the latest information on these two points.

    A current Defragmenter Report.

    Current Commit Charge figures from Task Manager.

    You need to be interested in what loads when you boot as this also relevant. Not just what you are using at any one time.

    To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware from Microsoft).

    With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting, or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig.

    Another useful feature of the programme is that you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information about the item selected.

    What advantage do you find having two browsers? I see it as just adding extra overhead to drag down system performance. Equally having multiple toolbars and search engines has the same result. They all load on Start Up.

    I used Adaware for a long time . It never found anything significant.
