I HATE Windows 8. This is the worst OS ever invented.

... that would make this whole discussion moot at best.  *grin*  Plus, that's just a long time away.

           

Grin! Er, this whole discussion started way back in 2012 when some dude gave Windows 8 the **** rating. That is what this thread is about. Now, check out how nothing this thread is about has even vaguely changed. Check out how Microsoft sales of Windows 8 and of tablets and telephones is bottom of the pack and we understand. The real world is not interested in life and business confined to a kindergarten tile system.

All I would like to know is how to get my volume to work.  According to the icon its at 100%. but no sound.  I'm not computer savvy by any means, but I thought the volume part was about as simple as it gets, yet I have no volume and have no clue what the problem is.  If anyone out there can give me some instructions I would sincerely appreciate it.

When Shenan suggested returning the new laptop he does have a point.  Are you able to, and are you willing to return your new Windows 8 Tablet PC ?

Another alternative which may work for you, as it did for me. I found a IT shop who were selling Windows 7 ($200to $250), and for a $60 surcharge they would install it to your windows 8 computer.

I am now running Windows 7, and I really appreciate the Windows 7 interface, much more now after having used Windows 8 for some twelve months. 

There are a few things in the Windows 7 GUI that I don't like, which I believe Windows XP did better, for example when I select a drive in the "Tree" view of Windows Explorer, it is nice to know how much free disk space in on that drive without having to right click the drive and select "Properties".  It is amazing how frustrating the loss of this one features is, but then Windows 8 is the loss of so many useful GUI features, Windows 7 is great in comparison.  Even if Microsoft wins again because I end up paying for both Windows 8 and Windows 7, I am very happy to be running Windows 7.

I hope to use Windows 7 for my desktop for as long as Windows 8 continues to use have its current GUI.  After Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7, I will have to re-evaluate my position (check out what Apple is like at that time).

I think Microsoft would have done a lot better if they had kept the Windows 7 GUI, and added Metro Apps for the Tablet users, allowing these apps to be used in either Full Screen mode or in Windows like other Windows applications. Then slowly we may have all accepted Metro Apps and, over time may have migrated to using the Metro Apps. 

I wonder if there are only a few of us who dislike Windows 8, and maybe even fewer of us will pay the extra money to get Windows 7 installed to our new Windows 8 computers ?  I did, will you ?

An OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit would cost about $99.  A Full Retail license of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit probably about $180.  The trick would still be determining if all of the hardware internal to the system is supported under Windows 7 (there are drivers for it) - but beyond that...  Installation would be fairly straight forward.

By the time Microsoft stops supporting Windows 7 (January 14, 2020) I am sure there will have been many more changes in the computing landscape that would make this whole discussion moot at best.  *grin*  Plus, that's just a long time away.

OMG I wish I had read this before I bought a new laptop with Windows 8 on it.  I get so frustrated with this OS that I could spit nails.  Did you ever get used to it?????

Return it.  If this is the first thing you have read about Windows 8 that you wish you would have read before you bought it - Windows 8 is not for you.  Pretty straight forward.
