You need to uninstall Windows Live Essentials first and then process with the update.
The fix you suggested didn't work.
It wanted to reinstall GWFL again :(
I think we will wait until MS releases a fix update.

Hi,
Just installing this month's updates, and I'm having a problem installing one of them. Games For Windows Software 3.5 doesn't seem to want to update and is giving the error code 80070643. Had a quick search round and can't seem to find anything useful. Not sure what's causing this. Anybody else having this issue?

Uninstalled WL, update installed fine, reinstalled WL, checked 4 windows update, update is now back waiting to install - again - tried installing, failed, back to square one... might be helpful if these updates were tested on real-world PCs b 4 being unleashed on us.
