Windows Update persistent Error Code 80070490

Hello,

I am getting a persistent Error Code 80070490 everytime I try to use Windows Update.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 on an ASUS laptop model K93SV.

What I have tried already:

I tried both methods from here without success: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044

ONE. Actually first when you click the above link, a window pops up and asks you if you want to use MicrosoftFixit.wu.LB.22273728841374927.15.1.Run , which I tried and it didn't find any errors. No luck.

TWO. Then I tried method 1 (Checksur.exe) but after it finished successfully, I still couldn't update.

THREE. Then I tried the looooong method 2 (Upgrade with the CD - over 1 hour and a half). After most steps and one or two auto-reboots were completed, and when I thought it would finally fix it, the machine tried to reboot to apply everything, but while Windows were loading it gave the "blue screen of death", with a text saying something about "...STOP..." (couldn't read the rest of it that fast). After that it informed me that it could not repair and that it would roll back to my previous setup...

I also tried:

FOUR. msert.EXE

FIVE. windowsupdate.diagcab and

SIX. Windows6.1-KB947821-v24-x64

NOTHING OF THOSE 6 THINGS WORKS FOR ME!

What can I do?

***Update: 24/10/2012***

Today I saw the update icon on the taskbar (bottom right corner of the screen). I clicked it, hit "Try Again" for the updates, but again I got the same error. Then I noticed that my "shut down" button had a yellow shield. When I clicked it, a bunch of updates was installed prior to complete shut down. Then I booted the machine, and more updates were installed before boot. Finally, when the machine booted, I could see those new updates in my "Update History", dated today 24/10, and the previous ones were dated 12/9, so I guess that for a month and a half I wasn't able to update Windows. However, I can still not search for new updates with the Windows Update tool...  I suppose this happens only when there are updates needing reboot? In any case, the problem remains, but I'm glad my PC is updated with today's most recent updates.

1a. Don't recall. But there's a slight change in my story, sorry I was confused before: The SDD was installed a priori. Windows was installed directly on it by the shop. The only transfer is related to the DATA from the smaller 1TB HDD, to a new bigger one of 3TB.

1b. Can't say exactly, but last windows updates were from 12/9. Sounds correct.

1c. Oct 16th, once after lunch, and a second time after dinner.

2a. First time (lunch) yes, second time (dinner) no. It was 2013.

2b. Don't know about 2012. I only remember installing "AVG". I first noticed "2013" next to it when I tried to uninstall. Could it have been auto-upgraded? (screens looked aways alike)

2c. No. Not that I know of.

    1. Correction: I uninstalled 2013, not 2012. Since Oct 16th.

4a. Don't remember. Time is suspicious with the updates. Maybe same date with 1b (12/9).

4b. Probably yes. I didn't opt for their removal. Where are they?

    5a. Explorer 9.

5b. I have never used it. Tried just now a few sites. Looks ok. Any site special you'd like me to check to make sure?

5c. Yes. You had strictly suggested so.

1a. About 6 months ago. I've changed memory chips because the previous ones failed...

1b. Combination of preinstall and clean install.  It was preinstalled on the normal HD, but then they added an SDD and they copied the installation from one disk to another at the store.

    1. Now nothing. I uninstalled AVG 2013 because I thought it was affecting the update...
    2. None whatsoever (that I know of).
    3. Didn't seem so, doesn't look like it.
    4. Yes
    5. Yes
    6. Yes
    7. Chrome is default.

    9. I used the AVG PC TuneUp ONCE. I've never used it since. Timing is suspicious, that's why I had selected to remove AVG 2013 alltogether...

[Please refrain from quoting my posts from now on. Just answer my questions in a correspondingly-numbered list (per the quote box above). Thank you.]

1a. When (exact date, preferably) was the SDD installed?

1b. When (exact date, preferably) did first encounter problems running a manual check for updates?

1c. When (exact date, preferably) did you do the Repair Install?

2a. Was AVG (Free, I assume) 2012 or 2013 still installed when you did the Repair Install?

2b. Speaking of which, had AVG 2012 ever been installed?

2c. Has any other anti-virus ever been installed since you purchased the computer?

    1. How long has the computer been connected to the internet since you uninstalled AVG 2012?

4a. When (exact date, preferably) did you run AVG PC TuneUp?

4b. Do you have backups of ALL the changes AVG PC TuneUp made to the computer? [1]

    5a. Is Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) or IE9 installed?

5b. Is Internet Explorer (either version) working OK if you choose to use it?

5c. Did you run the Java & Flash Player checks using Internet Explorer?

Hello PA Bear, thanks for trying to help!

Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious]diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply (no need to quote this post):

1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?

About 6 months ago. I've changed memory chips because the previous ones failed. This had caused a few BSODs back then, and a few ChckDsk s were needed so as to fix problems with the disk. Probably this contributed to the cause of today's problems, although I think I've updated a couple of times since the last ChkDsk.

1b. Did Win7 64-bit come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it, did you do a clean install of Win7, or did you upgrade from Vista to Win7?

Combination of preinstall and clean install.  It was preinstalled on the normal HD, but then they added an SDD and they copied the installation from one disk to another at the store.

    1. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire?  What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed?  What third-party firewall (if any)?

Now nothing. I uninstalled AVG 2013 because I thought it was affecting the update. I can still see it under Programs and Features, but I guess it's because of the user settings that I decided not to be uninstalled.

    1. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?

None whatsoever (that I know of).

    1. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [pick one] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

Didn't seem so, doesn't look like it.

    1. Are ALL of the following updates currently listed in View installed updates*(not Update History*)? ****** [1]

        (a) KB2724197 check, KB2743555 check, KB2661254 check & KB2749655 check;

        (b) KB2744842 check, KB2705219 check, KB2712808 check, KB2731847 check & KB2736233 check;

        (c) KB2698365 check, KB2691442 check, KB2655992 check & KB2719985 check [or possibly KB2721691] no check, but previous applies;

        (d) KB2685939 check & KB2686831 check;

        (e) KB2604115 check, KB2658846 check, KB2660649 check, KB2676562 check, KB2688338 check, KB2690533 check & KB2656411 check & KB2644615 check.

Hope none of those has been damaged by the problems I mentioned under your first question though...

    1. Is Java Version 7 Update 9 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER (ONLY!) => http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

    Yes, V7 U9.

    1. Is Adobe Flash Player v11.4.402.287 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER (ONLY!) => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

    Yes, 11,4,402,287 installed

    1. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?

Chrome is default. I almost prefer to throw away the pc than to have to change that! (permanently)

    9. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner Registry Cleaner)?

I used the AVG PC TuneUp ONCE. I've never used it since. Timing is suspicious, that's why I had selected to remove AVG 2013 alltogether. But I don't find TuneUp standing alone under Programs and Features. How do I remove the rest of it if there still is anything left of it installed?

    Hello Smittychat

In my topmost post I explain the six things I did before posting here. One of which was the repair install, which gave me the blue screen of death. Twice actually!

Yes I know.  That's why I suggested the next thread.

    1. Open Event Viewer and look for the Blue Screen Error

Post back the Event ID and message verbatim

In case you don't know how to open Event Viewer,

Start > Right click on My Computer

    Select Manage

Select Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application Logs and System Logs

Look for date/time Error coinciding with the Blue Screen

Managing WSUS from the Command Line

The other solutions you are prompting me to see are too technical for me. Sorry but I cannot understand what to do. Dare to guide me through step by step?
