what is runtime broker, and why does it use so much memory?

I've posted this on another similar thread but as it is now nearly a week since I implemented it and it has totally solved the runtime broker problem for me, I thought I would post it here as well.

I found many of the suggestions here worked - but only briefly.  The problem always returned.

The one solution that has worked for me, permanently, is to disable Windows Search.  I realise Microsoft will not be encouraging this option but it does seem to solve the Runtime broker problem.

Right click on the Start button, select 'Run', enter 'services.msc' and the just disable 'Windows Search' from the menu.

in task manager there is process called Runtime Broker. and it uses over 600 MB of my ram. putting my average usage at 60% on my 4 gig laptop. not noticed any performance issues yet. just a lot memory being used. makes me think of windows vista almost bc it had same issue in past. it would use all system resources.

If your RuntimeBroker.exe consumes high memory and display high RAM usage, you may want to investigate your installed 3rd-party apps. Specifically, look at 3rd-party apps which you may have installed after you noticed this problem. Uninstall them one after the other and restart your computer and then check the memory utilization, to try and isolate the problematic app.

Troubleshoot Touch issue:

I would suggest you to run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter and check if there is any hardware issue.

a) Press Windows key + W on your keyboard.

b) Type Troubleshooting and click Troubleshooting.

c) Click on View All.

d) Click on Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter.

e) Click on Next button to run the troubleshooter.

If the troubleshooter didn’t detect any problems, then the issue is probably caused due to a corrupt or incompatible driver. I would suggest you to visit the manufacturer’s website to download and install the latest driver.

You may also calibrate your touch settings as mentioned in this article and check if it makes any difference.

As a clean install I loaded Windows 10.

After a few days I started to notice that it wasn't running very quick at all, and quite slow. My investigations quickly revealed 'runtime broker' as the culprit.

I have since followed most solutions, including supposedly disabling it in the Registry.

The problem still occurs, I now have to have task manager open all the time so that I can 'end task'.

I get by in this way but no way is this a solution. I don't really see disabling MS services as being a fix (after all we want bells and whistles).

I'm considering replacing with Win 7, I'm really not seeing any big advantage to Win 10.

I welcome all thoughts and suggestion?

Try disabling Windows Search as I describe above.  This is the only thing I have changed in Windows 10 and it has totally resolved the problem for me.  The problem had previously slowed everything down so that I also was wondering about going back to Windows 7.

I would suggest returning to your more reliable OS.

Did you ever have an OS with so many problems?

Maybe before the year is over they will have fixed all the problems.

I encountered my Money app needed a registry fix. The runtime broker doesn't even exist in my OS 8.1. Windows photo viewer didn't work right.

It would not play in any other than name order in the viewer or the slideshow.

I found Calendar not installed; I found Themes in the Solitaire also awaiting a future installation. I had to re letter the plug in drive according to instructions obtained again with an internet search after 10 changed it.

In addition, I find that since they put in an update apparently the computer did not go into standby automatically, for 3 days before I restored 8.1. The start menu tiles does not have an uninstall option on them nor a find in file.

Edge has a really nice text only option for news files but it has less functions then Explorer otherwise.

The text to speech voices are missing the British woman's voice in the 10 upgrade.

Cortana is a nice twist on a search application. It has voice recognition of a sort but I usually am typing it out anyway.

The email handler MAIL like on 8.1 has few functions.

The Windows Live Mail download is still much more practical.

These problems should have been foreseen and corrected before the upgrade was launched not left to be fixed from online suggestions by users and by IT people in the institutions that are making the upgrade.

So I believe. 

Kudos to Microsoft for at least making the trip back easy.
