what is runtime broker, and why does it use so much memory?

in task manager there is process called Runtime Broker. and it uses over 600 MB of my ram. putting my average usage at 60% on my 4 gig laptop. not noticed any performance issues yet. just a lot memory being used. makes me think of windows vista almost bc it had same issue in past. it would use all system resources.

    the apps I installed were:

    Bank of America

    Tunein Radio

    Netflix

    The Time (this might be the same clock program you had)..

    The Wall Street Journal

    Fresh Paint

    HowStuffWorks

    StumbleUpon

    The Big Picture

    Windows 8 Cheat Keys

    Periodic Table

    USA Today

    Wikipedia

    Wordament

    I'll be checking which one of these is the culprit.  The ones that came with Win8 software seem to be running fine.  If you see anything common with what you had/have please let me know so I can narrow it down much quicker.

    Hi - it would be handy if you could tell us what apps you uninstalled. I would keep an eye on the process though as I thought I had it cracked at one point and then it started collecting memory like it was going out of fashion again.

    I have only installed a few apps as far as I can remember, maybe only two - a time tile and youtube + is all I can remember. I did have to try about 5 or 6 different time tiles before I found one that actually worked without having to open it but I uninstalled all the useless ones.

    I just got off a long chat session with an Answer tech rep, or whatever they are called. He did actually take the time to listen to me and I used the MS Diagnostic tool to collect logs and upload it to them. He said that he will "endorse the case and pass it to his team lead so they can gather as much evidence from other users as possible". It took me a long time to actually get through to a live chat support rep but if everybody else who is experiencing this problem could do the same then we might get somewhere.

    Hi Mark,

    I was seeing a similar problem.. but not with Norton software.  I downloaded a bunch of Apps and I think one or more of them are a problem.  After I have uninstalled them all I see my Runtime Broker significantly lower and not creeping up.   After I uninstalled I saw 2.6MB of memory consumed.  In the last 5 min, Runtime Broker is using 2MB. 

    I can give you a list of apps I uninstalled.  I still have to narrow it down to which ones were the actual culprits.
