what is runtime broker, and why does it use so much memory?

in task manager there is process called Runtime Broker. and it uses over 600 MB of my ram. putting my average usage at 60% on my 4 gig laptop. not noticed any performance issues yet. just a lot memory being used. makes me think of windows vista almost bc it had same issue in past. it would use all system resources.

    With "Clock Tile" App running ; Runtime Broker 358.7MB

    After uninstall "Clock Tile"       ; Runtime Broker 1.8MB

    Also open; Chrome (1 tab), Task Mgr, sticky note, mail app, store app

    Note:  The 358.7MB usage was right after fresh reboot.  I was seeing memory leakage as high as

    1400+ MB Runtime Broker when I left my rig running overnight

    I just got Windows 8 in a new machine. Same issue as above. Did uninstalling Norton make a difference?

    "The Time" app has been fixed and no longer makes the Runtime Broker go crazy!  I, too, currently have "The Time" app installed and running just fine.

    The "Clocktime" app has not been fixed, and it still makes the Runtime Broker go crazy.  I uninstalled the "Clocktime" app, and once I did so, the Runtime Broker no longer goes crazy.

    I use The Time app and have not seen my Runtime Broker go crazy, if you're looking for an alt app

    The tile application, "The Time", has been fixed and updated, but my Runtime Broker still had a memory leak and the Runtime Broker was still chewing up to 500meg or even to 1 gig of RAM each session.  Eventually my computer would kind of give-out, and I would have to reboot periodically.  After awhile, each session, the hard drive started thrashing continuously - probably the pagefile and friends getting extra duty, as I only have 4 gig of real RAM.

    I eventually traced the problem to an app called "Clocktime", from a German company.  Once I uninstalled that, the Runtime Broker was no longer being reported as the most memory-hogging program in Task Manager.  Now with "Clocktime" gone, instead of leaking 1 gig of ram a day, the Runtime Broker is back to normal and has to be searched for in the Task Manager instead of rising to the top of memory consumption.

    So the Runtime Broker memory leak is real, and it is usually one of the "clock" apps running in the Lock Screen background that is causing the leak.
