How do I get the latest version of GenuineCheck.exe

If the ActiveX is not properly instlaling, that would tend to indicate that your security  software or settings is getting in the way - you need to check that first, and then start a new thread of your own, with details of what you've actually tried, and the results.

I couldn't use IE8 because it gave me the same run-around that everybody else it getting; i.e. "This version of the Windows Genuine Advantage validation tool is no longer supported".

I'm another one of those users with decades of experience, and I spent several hours trying different things to try to get those four August 2012 "patches" downloaded.

When I tried the downloads using Internet Explorer 9 (NINE), it first asked for and received permission from me to install an "add-in", i.e. "Windows Genuine Advantage".  (NOTE: not referred to as "ActiveX".)  From that point on, clicking the "CONTINUE" button on dowload sites appears to do the "validation" in the background, because when the site came back, the "CONTINUE" button has changed to "DOWNLOAD".  Internet Explorer 8 (EIGHT) was given permission, but did not appear to successfully install the "add-on"

• the same screen still offered an "alternative" method of validation, which was to download "GenuineCheck.exe" and run it manually, which as we've all discovered doesn't work. 

Admittedly, I'm working on my laptop @ the local public library, but it's also Windows 7 SP1 which I religiously keep up to date.  Since I usually use Firefox here, too, I haven't done much tinkering with IE9 settings, so they're probably pretty close to "defaults" set @ original installation.

Hope this gives you a clue: IE8 doesn't work for me and IE9 does.

You need to have IE set as Default Browser - then the ActiveX can run

If it still fails, go to the Diagnostics page at www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag and see if it finds any problems - if so, follow the advice, and then try validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate

then go back and try your download again.

People should now forget about using the Genuinecheck.exe file as it has stopped working.  I've downloaded it and ran it several times on my Windows XP SP3 Home Edition computer and it fails with the error message that the Windows Genuine Advantage validation tool is no longer supported.  Until Microsoft releases a newer version of Genuinecheck.exe (newer than v1.9.42.0 or v1.9.0042.0), users should now AVOID using it.  Ver. 1.9.42.0 of Genuinecheck.exe was released in mid-2009 and seemed to have expired lately.

For those who are using IE and having problems validating after using MGADiag, check the \Windows\System32\ folder and see if the LegitCheckControl.DLL file is there (latest version of this DLL file is 1.9.42.0).  This is needed to validate Windows in IE before obtaining non-security downloads from the MS Download center.  At least I can obtain downloads thru IE8 on my XP machine and validate Windows with that DLL file installed.
