Hi,

I would suggest you to try the step mentioned below and check if it helps.

Method: Try to change the default printer value in registry key and check if it helps.

Registry Disclaimer: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 322756 .

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows:(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/)

a) Click on Start.

b) Type regedit in the start search and click Enter.

c) Move to the location mentioned below.

              HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

d) In the right column, you will find key Device, **change the value to your Printer name.**e) It is of the format for example: "HP LaserJet 4250 PCL6,winspool,Ne03:".

f)  Right click on the value and click on Rename, change it to your printer name.

Hope this information is helpful.

As it turns out, in my case (and possibly in kflanagan's case as well) I had to set permissions on the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

After I gave the user full control on the key, I could set the value on the Device key as stated above.

Hi,

I would suggest you to check if you have a different user account or from an administration account.

I would  also suggest you to create a new user account and check if you are able to set the printer as default.

Create a user account

Hi,

1) What happens when you try to set the default printer?

2)  Do you get any error codes?

3) Can you print from other applications?

4) Can you print a test page?

Method 1: Troubleshoot PDF printing | Acrobat, Reader

Method 2: Diagnose and fix printer and printing problems automatically

    Hi,

I would suggest that you remove first your installed printer.

Then add role to your profile as Administrator if your are not the Administrator.  If you are the Administrator, after removing the installed printer just proceed on the next step, which is restart your computer.

    Then restart your computer.

Double check that your printer driver is already removed.

Then install again the printer driver to your computer.

    After installation

You would notice that you cannot still make that printer as your default printer.

Next you have to edit your registry.

    Click on Start.

Type regeditin the start search and click Enter.

    Move to the locationmentioned below.

                  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

In the right column, you will find key Devicechange the value to your Printer name.

Right click on the value and click on Rename, change it to your printer name.

Then right click the Windows key and select Permissions

Add the user and select allow full control

    Then go to Advance

On the Owner Tab make sure that the user is included if not add the user then check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" then apply.

    Restart your computer.

Remove the Administrator as part of the user profile then restart again your computer.

    Then that's it.
