Had same problem before after getting Windows 7. Now once again after updating Office 2010 I cannot print Exel docs and computer cannot set HP photosmart C410 printer as default. you helped me before but I lost the answer. something about going into system and sys/fix and changing the ??? help??? Kevin

I would suggest you to try the step mentioned below and check if it helps.

Method: Try to change the default printer value in registry key and check if it helps.

a) Click on Start.

b) Type regedit in the start search and click Enter.

c) Move to the location mentioned below.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

d) In the right column, you will find key Device, **change the value to your Printer name.**e) It is of the format for example: "HP LaserJet 4250 PCL6,winspool,Ne03:".

f) Right click on the value and click on Rename, change it to your printer name.

Hope this information is helpful.

As it turns out, in my case (and possibly in kflanagan's case as well) I had to set permissions on the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

After I gave the user full control on the key, I could set the value on the Device key as stated above.

Hi,

I would suggest you to check if you have a different user account or from an administration account.

I would also suggest you to create a new user account and check if you are able to set the printer as default.

1) What happens when you try to set the default printer?

2) Do you get any error codes?

3) Can you print from other applications?

4) Can you print a test page?

Hi Surya,

You can Take Ownership of a Registry Key in Windows 7 by following these steps:

a) Navigate to the key you want to take ownership of. For this example, we chose the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

b) Right-click on the (Windows) desired key and select Permissions from the popup menu.

c) On the Permissions dialog box, click Advanced.

d) Click the Owner tab on the Advanced Security settings dialog box. Select the owner name in the Change owner to list box. If you want to take ownership of all the subcontainers and objects, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.

e) If you want each child object (subkeys) of the selected parent object to have permissions inherited from its parent object, select the Include inheritable permissions from this object’s parent check box. If you want the permissions on the selected parent object to replace those on its descendant objects, select the Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object check box. Click Apply to apply your changes.

f) A dialog box displays warning you that all subkeys of the object, in this case the Display key, will inherit permissions from the object. Click Yes if you want to accept this and continue.

g) Click OK to close the Advanced Security Settings dialog box.

h) You are returned to the Permissions dialog box. Select the desired user name from the Group or user names list and select the check box under the Allow column for the Full Control row. Click OK.

i) To close the Registry Editor, select Exit from the File menu.
