Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Uninstall your version 2012 and then get the 2011 version from....

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
Click View installed updates.
Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

THIS!! Why isn't this post marked as the 'ANSWER' at the beginning of this thread? I've been looking forever for a fix for this same problem I've been having, and the above IS the solution. For the record, my setup is as follows:

HP Pavilion dv7t-6c00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC

Radeon HD 7470M (switchable graphics)

Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium SP1

I changed the switchable graphics in my Bios from 'Dynamic' to 'Fixed' and uninstalled the Windows Update KB2670838. I'm now running the 2012 version of the Windows Live Essentials pack, including WMM with NO problems! This solution should really be WAAAAY more prominent on this thread, as well as a note in the system requirements or 'release notes' for Windows Live Essentials 2012. It would eliminate a boatload of ridiculousness for people who can't get it to work right! Thanks for the fix, and do consider making this MUCH more available as 'public knowledge' for the sake of your users.

I never needed to change the Bios on my HP Pavilion dv7-6163cl. I just uninstalled the KB2670838 Windows Update and Movie Maker (my version is 2011) would work fine. Microsoft will try to reinstall the update so be aware when update Tuesdays come along.

I changed the bios option in order to use WMM 2012. I didn't have a problem with 2011 after uninstalling the (ridiculous) KB2670838 update, either. So if you want to step up to the latest version of WMM, try the Bios change.

So you recommend upgrading WMM 2011 to WMM 2012? What features does WMM 2012 have that make it better?
