Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Uninstall your version 2012 and then get the 2011 version from....

Movie Maker 2011

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  2. Click View installed updates.
  3. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

    Your VGA driver is also outdated and we're having a difficult time finding the right one for your hardware. Please check the link instead that will help you in finding the correct drivers for your device:

    The submitted log files indicate that video card drivers are still outdated and it is because at some point that the update you may have downloaded may not be the correct one for your device therefore it would be best to contact and consult your hardware manufacturer what the correct drivers would be necessary for your device.

    I ran the Intel hardware detection tool and received the following respond for the detected video hardware...

    Product Detected

    Intel® Processor Graphics 3000

    Current Driver Installed

    A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.

    ... As I mentioned, the HP video driver that I was using worked better with MM2012 then the Intel driver that was suggested I install in a previous forum response.  I find it odd that every other Microsoft video application works fine on my laptop except for MM2012, but I guess those are the breaks.  It would appear that this is the end of the road for me and Movie Maker 2012, at least until HP possibly releases another video driver update.

    I plan to re-install the HP video driver.  Hopefully I can also uninstalled WIndows Live Essentials 2012 and re-install 2011 to get me back to a working version of Movie Maker.  Thanks for the help. - Jim
