Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Uninstall your version 2012 and then get the 2011 version from....

Movie Maker 2011

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
Click View installed updates.
Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

MediaInfo gets details on your *source* files. A Movie Maker project file (.wlmp) isn't a video file at all; it's just lists the source files and their locations, the order of the clips, etc. You should be getting the information for each of your source videos, not for the project file.

Hi Brian,

Our support specialists have already saw the logs. Just to verify, have you already updated the codecs for your videos. If not, please try running the Microsoft Fix It tool for codecs. After that, download Media info here. Media info will be able to identify the codec required for your audio and video files, and will provide a link to the website for the required codec.

Also, is the finished movie have only audio and no video after saving it as a movie? In addition, please check if the Prepare files for faster editing is enabled. You can check it by clicking File(alt+f), going to Options, and clicking on the Advanced tab.

I ran the Microsoft Fix It tool for codecs. The only solution it found was to disable Xvid codec. I did that & it does not appear to have resolved the issue. I see no change.

I've downloaded MediaInfo, but when I add the .wlmp file to it, nothing happens. And I'm not sure what I should be doing to get MediaInfo to work. Do I have to add each individual video & audio file in my project to MediaInfo?

I have finished the project, but have not tried to publish it as a movie or anywhere yet. It's just saved as a project for now, but it's supposed to have video & audio in it.

The "prepare files for faster editing" is already enabled.
