Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Uninstall your version 2012 and then get the 2011 version from....

Movie Maker 2011

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  2. Click View installed updates.
  3. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

    As far as I can tell, I've downloaded the latest codecs to all files. I've converted all source files to .wmv using the Freemake Video Converter. However, absolutely nothing has changed when trying to create a new project in Movie Maker. I strictly get audio & nothing but a black screen for video on all files.

    For the instructions on how to use Mediainfo, please follow the steps below:

    1. Download Mediainfo
    2. Install the program
    3. Run the program
    4. Open your movie file using Mediainfo
    5. Switch the view of your mediainfo to text. To do this, click the View button on the upper left part of the window and click text
    6. When you see the codec that you're lacking, please download it. You can search for the codec in http://bing.com
