I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

- Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
- Click View installed updates.

2015-03-23T22:01:17+00:00 I changed the bios option in order to use WMM 2012. I didn't have a problem with 2011 after uninstalling the (ridiculous) KB2670838 update, either. So if you want to step up to the latest version of WMM, try the Bios change.

Sure, upgrade. Usually an upgrade gives you better performance, expanded features and better compatibility with the latest file formats. Probably a bunch of other features (honestly, I haven't used 2011 in ages, because I was so ticked off that I couldn't use 2012). Google might take you to a comparison between the two.
I just installed Live Essentials 2012 a couple/few days ago (now that I noticed a solution to the 'black screen' problem in 2012 WMM), so I haven't had the time to use 2012 WMM much yet.
On a different note, I did notice that they terminated Live Messenger...and 'rolled it into Skype'. Bizarre, but apparently it transfers all of your Live contacts over automagically. I don't use messengers much, though. It did make installation of the 2012 Essentials pack difficult, as they haven't completely taken out Messenger from the install process. I got a notice during installation that Live Messenger was updated and to click for the update. It then took me to Skype, and wanted to update my Skype to a previous version (which is because I already have the newest Skype on my computer)?? I did that...then I couldn't get into my Skype account. Had to download the latest Skype again just to get my access back to it!
Microsoft needs to get their act together. You can even go into the 'repair' menu, and it still shows Live Messenger among the other programs in the package. Really??
