Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Uninstall your version 2012 and then get the 2011 version from....

Movie Maker 2011

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  2. Click View installed updates.
  3. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

    I feel inclined to post this to hopefully help people from wasting as much time as I have. I have been thru 3 iterations of sending logs to Microsoft for the Black video screen in Windows Movie Maker 2012 as well as 8 hours on the phone with my laptop vendor.

    Here is what I found to be going on after about 15 attempts.

    1. Microsoft Movie Maker 2012 now attempts to uses the Intel video components to speed up rendering video. Cool yes!! But it seems to require a Intel Graphic Media Accelerator driver of version 9.xx (Not even the most current 8.xx driver seems to work,...I tried every one of them, not till version 9 did it work. See below for how I did this)
    2. Many older laptops still have the version 8.xx Intel media accelerator drivers or an unsupported main graphics driver

    In this scenario, you will get the black screen.

    SO - until Microsoft makes WMM 2012 compatible with the older graphics drivers, which I doubt is high on their list, or until your Laptop vendor provides a new driver for your 1+ year old laptop (which I am also guessing is not high on their list) your only option is to revert back to WMM 2011.

    Sorry for the bad news.

    For you hacks - I did find WHQL unsigned driver for AMD / Intel setups that uses the latest from AMD and Intel - These did get WMM 2012 working using the 9.17 version of the intel driver, but since the drivers are unsigned, some programs that used a recognizable AMD driver are now only using the much slower Intel video. I would only use this option if Windows Movie Maker 2012 is your final objective.

    Hi AnthonyLast,

    We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. We would like to know if you are having the same issue in Movie Maker that showing black screen when playing a video but the audio works fine? If yes, please verify if you already tried the workaround provided by JosephGresock. Some customers also confirmed that the workaround were able to resolve their problem by uninstalling the latest update which is KB2670838.  We have reposted the workaround below:

    1. In Start Menu, type Windows Update and open it.
    2. Click "View update history" on the left.
    3. Click the "Installed updates" link near the top.
    4. In the search box (Search Installed Updates in upper right), type KB2670838
    5. If the results are filtered to one entry with that KB number, right-click it and select Uninstall.
    6. Restart your computer then run Movie Maker again and check if the issue still occurs.
