Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks!

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

Hi KübraDurgun,

Thank you for posting here. It seems that you're also having the black preview screen issue in Movie Maker. Let me assist you with your inquiry above.

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  2. Click View installed updates.
  3. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

Please get back to us if you have further questions.

Thanks!

    Hi Mark,

Thank you for clearing that up. Since this issue is currently being investigated by our product group, we would like to request for additional information on what exactly happens on the 2012 version of Movie Maker on your laptop. Does it only show the black screen? What is your video card model? Did you already updated the drivers for your video card? Does the issue happen on any videos or photos?

The information that you will provide will definitely help us in investigating this issue so it can be resolved as soon as possible.

    We appreciate your response.

    Thank you.

HP laptop; core i7;windows 7;radeon graphics HD6770M (which does not appear to be in use with MM).

The internal graphics driver Intel HD graphics, now indicated as AMD with AMD driver 8.882.2.3000 dated 30/09/20119 (device manager) or 09/08/2011 (dxdiag).

The previous driver was ATI 8.830.6.3000 dated 7/5/2011. The Radeon driver has also been checked previously from an external source but no difference was noted. In Device manager I notice that the Radeon appears to share the AMD driver?

MM2011 appears to be fully functional for sound video pictures and text on screen (with the exception of one file - that may have become corrupted).

MM2012 plays sounds correctly and tracks along through the storyboard, but the black screen persists. No display of pictures (jpg) no video (AVI or MOD) and no title / text on screen.

    Mark
