Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Uninstall your version 2012 and then get the 2011 version from....

Movie Maker 2011

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
Click View installed updates.
Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

I downgraded to WMM 2011 and updated video drivers and am now no longer getting the 'black screen' on parts of my video. I spent hours combining over 25 video clips, 6 of which turned black on the original output. Now that I've been forced to downgrade as a 'solution,' I'm in desperate need of a solution to downgrade/convert my .wlmp file so that it can be opened in WMM 2011.

Hello Everyone,

We would request that you check your machine how many video graphics adapters are currently installed. We are seeing these cases to be pretty common with laptop computers that have dual VGAs and the cause of the issue was that only one was updated somehow or both of them were not. These cases do happen because most laptops have proprietary OEM restrictions that prevents us from using the generic update made available from the respective VGAs website. Movie Maker requires that the latest updates for the video card be installed in the machine in order for it to run properly. As such, if the generic update could not be installed it would be best to consult with your manufacturer in order to have the latest updates be installed on your machine.

You may also check if you have customized any display settings on your machine. If so, please change the current DPI settings to 100% to see if this helps out with the issue. To change the DPI settings:
1. Open a navigation window on your computer. In the location bar, copy and paste the following: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display.
2. Verify that the radio button is selected to "Smaller 100%".
3. Click the "Customer sizing options" or "Set Custom text size (DPI)" and verify it is set to 100%.
If any of you were successful in updating the video cards, please send us new set of log files so that we could have our product experts review this matter further.
