Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Uninstall your version 2012 and then get the 2011 version from....

Movie Maker 2011

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  2. Click View installed updates.
  3. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

    I suffered with exactly this problem for weeks, Win 7, HP DV6, Radion HD6770M, more than a year ago, and despite changing drivers, etc etc as many have done before, the issue was not resolved and I reverted to using and alternative, less powerful video editor in place of MM 12.

    I recently began the process to resolve this matter and have spent several days, going through many of the same hoops, attempting driver changes... and then, I found the post from the escalation team's flamanar. Thank you, thank you, thank you. A quick click to change to the bios setting as mentioned and MM12 works immediately. 

    This solution needs to receive a much higher status, many people seem to have suffered exactly the same problem, I found no reference to this on the HP site either.

    I too have this problem. 

    Win 10, no KB to uninstall. Videos have audio only. Preview has black screen. 

    Laptop is a Toshiba, so the HP fix is not likely. 

    Please help!
