Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Uninstall your version 2012 and then get the 2011 version from....

Movie Maker 2011

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  2. Click View installed updates.
  3. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

    Issues with Dxtory and your game don't involve Movie Maker. You go through the capture and saving/rendering processes before opening Movie Maker.

    Video editing software often uses different codecs than apps that simply play a video. I'm not a game player, programmer or hardware expert. We'll see what suggestions others offer.

    I have been through all of Dxtory's pre-installed codecs (that includes Microsoft video 1) and all caused the game in question (Minecraft) to crash when I begin recording

    I would like to know if there is a reason behind some AVI files being used and some rejected

    I am running on a dell studio 1558

    ATI mobilty radeon 5470 graphics card

    4GB of installed RAM

    intel core i5 quad core processor

    756GB of installed hard drive memory

    Windows 7 64-bit home premium

    ALSO: due to lag reasons on my computer constantly all fancy textures on windows 7 are disabled to conserve system memory

    There is almost no problem with the codec (I'm about 90% sure) since media player can play it, but then windows live movie maker cannot (I may have repeated my previous post there, apologies)

    Would there be a reason why one codec would work in WLMM and others do not

    may it have something to do with my graphics card
