Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback
I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks!

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

2013-12-14T22:26:01+00:00 It seems like a simple normal case of the codec used to compress the video clip not working well enough with Movie Maker. The Dxtory website shows you have a number of codec choices when making the video clip from the captured uncompressed data....
try the Microsoft Video 1 codec.... and see this page of my website for info about other choices

2013-12-14T21:09:42+00:00 Hi Litton_B
I have been searching through these forums for a while now and yet to no avail
I currently use dxtory to record videos for youtube using the dxtory video codec which outputs videos in .avi files (I then extract the audio files so that I have in game music as well as commentray)
I the combine both these elements in movie maker and then save the movie
The file saves and produces a file that has all of the audio but no video
This can often be random as sometimes I get only some of the video segments without video leaving me with either a half done video or just me talking about a black screen
I have tried all of the suggestions above:
- I updated all aspects of my windows environment (video card drivers, net framework etc.)
- I downgraded movie maker to version 2011 (any other versions just immediately crashes or me anyway now (after I did the net framework - 4.5 update
3)I assume that the codecs are installed since all other platforms except occasionally movie maker can play the files
- I tried making videos of shorter duration but that didn't work
I would appreciate it if I could get some help on this
Thanks
