Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback
I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks!

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

2012-09-19T02:23:53+00:00 Hi Cesar,
When I logged into this forum I didn't see a private message link, at least not the type of link that was available to me when Gerard posted a private message to me several days ago. I'd be willing to upload additional log files once I have access to the private message.
I would also like to mention that I have loaded mp4 and avi files into Movie Maker 2012 and, like Wildlife.wmv, all that would play was the audio. So this problem affects several video file formats not just wmv.
About a month ago I also install Microsoft Expressions Encoder 4 SP2. Importing Wildlife.wmv or an .avi file plays okay in Expressions Encoder. To this point every application I have installed, Movie Maker 2011 (until it was replaced), Expressions Encoder 4, Movie Maker 2.6, they all work okay on my laptop. If it is a codec discovery problem, why would these other applications be able to find and use the installed codecs, but MM2012 is unable to do so? - Jim
