I’ve just started to run Windows 8 for the first time.  Have there been any updates released for Windows 8?

Yes.  An update for Windows 8 has been released that addresses a set of post-launch issues.  You will not be notified that this update is available during the first 24 hours after you run Windows 8 for the first time, however you can manually check for and install this update at any time.

If you are experiencing any problems with your Windows 8 installation, make sure you have installed the latest updates by following these steps:

1.     At the Start screen, type Windows Update.

2.     Tap or click Settings.

3.     Tap or click Install optional updates.

4.     Tap or click the link that says an important update is available.  If you want to install any optional updates that are available, you can click the link notifying you that optional updates are available as well.

Check all of the updates you want to install and then tap or click the Install button.  You will need to reboot your PC after installing the update for the changes to go into effect.

    After doing the update my computer would NOT load Windows.

    It would try, I would see the Windows8 Logo and even eventually here the familiar sound but would only have a black screen.

    Went into BIOS I believe it is (where you go when you keep hitting f10 while starting your computer) and did the hard disk test and memory test I think it was under Diagnostics.

    Took forever to do (1st test was 15 minutes and 2nd test took a couple hours) but regardless both "passed".

    I had before this taken the power cord off and battery out and tried to reset to no avail.

    Anyway - this morning it came on again like nothing had happened - WHAT THE HECK???

    So now am afraid to shut it down again and have the black screen again!!!

    Unless Microsoft has a "fix" for this I think I am going to have to go pay someone to reinstall Windows7 for me.  I am afraid to try that now myself as I do not have a Windows7 disk (anyone remember when they always used to give you a disk when you bought a new computer??? You know, just in case there was a glitch and you had to reinstall it?)

    If the problem is indeed the NViidia card (sorry don't know how to spell it) then why doesn't Microsoft have a patch for it or an update for the driver by now???

    One more thing - know this is petty considering the much bigger problems but does anyone know where the "minimizer" button is in Windows8??  Every time I want to open another window up I am having to close down the one I am in - feels like Windows 95 all over again...

    And - if Micro happens to read this - the "Charms" don't always work in email. Click settings to add another email acct and it just disappears.  In other words, won't stay open.

    It's the Nvidia update, I'm pretty sure of it. Keep the driver rolled back to anything that wasn't done in October, and it should be fine. That's what worked for me. I updated everything else, and it's been fine.

    Hi Everyone that is running into Bluescreens after the update.   There are some steps above from Technoreaper on how to get this working.   Please let us know if these do not work for you.  Aslo PC Models or type of Nvidia card you are running might be helpful as well.

    As well I've sent a private message to some of you requesting logs.   We would very much appreciate your assistances with getting logs on this issue.

    I absolutely do not recommend installign Windows Updates at this point. On certain machines it will cause the machine to hang or take 2 hours + to load windows.

    If it isn't already broken, don't fix it. I spent hours dealign with Windows Update, I had to uninstall all updates then do a system recovery.

    Remove whatever windows updates you installed, you may need to do a system restore afterwards from DVD to before they were installed. This is what fixed it for me. I was also only "sometimes" able to boot. The culprit, from my experience, is the Windows Udpates.
