I’ve just started to run Windows 8 for the first time.  Have there been any updates released for Windows 8?

Yes.  An update for Windows 8 has been released that addresses a set of post-launch issues.  You will not be notified that this update is available during the first 24 hours after you run Windows 8 for the first time, however you can manually check for and install this update at any time.

If you are experiencing any problems with your Windows 8 installation, make sure you have installed the latest updates by following these steps:

1.     At the Start screen, type Windows Update.

2.     Tap or click Settings.

3.     Tap or click Install optional updates.

4.     Tap or click the link that says an important update is available.  If you want to install any optional updates that are available, you can click the link notifying you that optional updates are available as well.

Check all of the updates you want to install and then tap or click the Install button.  You will need to reboot your PC after installing the update for the changes to go into effect.

    12 hours in and no answer and neither computer is fixed.  Have tried everything I can think of using the troubleshooting blue screen that comes up but it won't allow anything to be done.  Can't start in safe mode or any other mode offered in the advanced screen.

    Further to my email posting I tried to refresh which eventually left me with a working system but all my applications removed. On my desktop is a icon with a list of all my removed programs and drivers. Absolute bobbins!!!

    Same happened here. I had to refresh 5 or 6 times yesterday! It drove me insane. I have no word processor, because I can't even get Open Office. The other stuff, like Nvidia drivers, RealTek, whatever, crash the computer too, just as you said. I'm laying low for a while. Maybe upgrading was a mistake.

    Hi ScottA0227 - have you tried a refresh or restart (assuming you made a system recovery disk)?  Sorry to hear of your trouble, update seems to have run fine for me and even helped (I was going to post a query about a problem I was having with Media Centre when I saw Michael O's post and, voila, the patch fixed my trouble).  My 2006 computer never ran so well before, I feel like for $40 I've shortchanged someone here!

    System recovery disk? Very funny - no option for that in Windows 8.
