I’ve just started to run Windows 8 for the first time.  Have there been any updates released for Windows 8?

Yes.  An update for Windows 8 has been released that addresses a set of post-launch issues.  You will not be notified that this update is available during the first 24 hours after you run Windows 8 for the first time, however you can manually check for and install this update at any time.

If you are experiencing any problems with your Windows 8 installation, make sure you have installed the latest updates by following these steps:

1.     At the Start screen, type Windows Update.

2.     Tap or click Settings.

3.     Tap or click Install optional updates.

4.     Tap or click the link that says an important update is available.  If you want to install any optional updates that are available, you can click the link notifying you that optional updates are available as well.

Check all of the updates you want to install and then tap or click the Install button.  You will need to reboot your PC after installing the update for the changes to go into effect.

    Beware after installing Windows 8 and restarting after downloading the updates Windows 8 refuses to load.  This happened on both of the computers I have.  Keeps trying to make an automatic repair and then fails and gives me the blue screen with the troubleshooting options of which nothing has worked to get Windows 8 to load.

    same here as everyone else  cant get past the 13€ percent mark  no way to get to any reboot or safe mode starts   auto repai starts and scraan goes black  its a brand new laptop   this happened with vista and its why we left windows    everything worked great until last nights "critical" update  fix this asap would you  

    Ok guys so apparently from what I can discern there is a problem with the update - if you have update already and you are in the restart loop then no chance that's it you have to reinstall windows 8.

    After you reinstall  - DO NOT UPDATE !

    so apparently you would have to uninstall display and audio drivers - allow update then install them back again ( i personally will do this in safe mode -to get it press windows button + r , type msconfig and choose second option the diagnostic startup then apply and restart and attempt the above)

    I haven't personally tried this but approach with caution

    Am back to the BLACK SCREEN again since updating Windows8!!

    Can anyone out there explain to a novice like myself the exact steps to take to reverse the Nvidia card updates (provided that is indeed the cause???)

    Remember... I HAVE A BLACK SCREEN - ONLY A BLACK SCREEN - CANNOT GET ANYTHING ELSE TO LOAD OTHER THAN A BLACK SCREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    And, how do I even know if I have this NVIDIA card?

    When it was working I had an "ATI" error come up whenever I started on the desktop... believe there is not a Windows8 driver for it yet so hence the error code.

    Can't believe how many HOURS I've spent with this problem!!!

    Remove whatever windows updates you installed, you may need to do a system restore afterwards from DVD to before they were installed. This is what fixed it for me. I was also only "sometimes" able to boot. The culprit, from my experience, is the Windows Udpates.
