Failure configuring Windows update KB2685811

On Windows 7 pro x64 with SP1, I've been getting this message when rebooting after installing KB2685811 ("Update for Kernel-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems"): "Failure configuring Windows update". All updates from last Tuesday (13/Nov/2012) were installed correctly, only this one fails.

I tried...

Rebooting, F8 and then using repair. It detected no errors.

Installing the patch with the antivirus (Avira free) disabled, which changed nothing.

Downloading the update manually and installing it. Made no difference.

Installing KB947821, found here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858

I then found a file I had downloaded yesterday (can't remember where from) called windowsupdate.diagcab

I ran it and it detected 2 errors:

[a] Potential Windows update database error detected (0x80070002)

[b] Problem with Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

I eventually solved [a] and [b] with MicrosoftFixit50202.msi, but not the original problem. I still get the "Failure configuring Windows update" message after rebooting, once the installation reaches 61%.

There were a couple of other things I did, but I can't remember exactly what they were...

Any help is appreciated.

I had the same problem and found a solution.

For this update, TEMP file location should be set to default  C:.

I  changed Temp file location from RAM disk to C:\ for this update and it worked.  Thereafter I changed the Temp file location back to RAM disk.

I've done all that. My error is different too. I had completely empty temp folders and could not install it. It fails every time. My current workaround? I set it to not reboot and try to install every night. Told it to install when I SAID TO!!! It's still there, lurking in the background. I sent my log file to Wei, but never got a response. I give up. I've done EVERYTHING others have said to try. Changed directories for temp folders, etc. My error number is 80041002. Different from anyone else's. Even the error in my CBS file is different from any that I've seen here. I am thinking that *maybe* just *maybe* it has something to do with having to reactivate my windows after installing a new motherboard. I honestly can't remember if I had the problem before my motherboard went out, but I had to reactivate windows when the new one went in. The only thing on the system that was replaced. At this point I've thrown in the towel. It can remain uninstalled. It still lurks in the background, but doesn't reboot me at night.

I worked on this issue for two days with plenty of restarts and failures.  Nothing worked until I cleaned out all of my temp files, then I had no problems getting final two updates to work, including KB2685811 which was giving me the most trouble.  All of the other updates were giving me error code 800F0826, which meant that another failure was preventing configuration.  KB2685811 was giving me error code 8004402F.  I first installed all of the other updates, then disabled anti-virus, which didn't help previously, then deleted all temp folders using:

    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/

After that, I got update KB2685811 and optional update KB2592687 to install and configure without any problems.

I am having same issue but not  sure what you mean with this, is not the TEMP file location by default C:\Windows\TEMP and "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local" I went to system properties and once I hit the advanced tap and Environment Variables that's what I have under system and user variables, but not sure if you have a RAMdisk setup or it that is something that is in windows by default, I am working with a Win7 Home Premium SP1 64bits

Wei. I've been dealing with this since November. I am sending you my CBS file because mine shows a completely different error than any I've seen here. I still cannot install update KB2685811. I'm beyond frustrated at this point. I am about to start a new semester, and I simply cannot have my pc reboot and lose any work that I might leave on screen overnight. Yes it's good form to save and quit, but I shouldn't be FORCED to do it.
