Failure configuring Windows update KB2685811

On Windows 7 pro x64 with SP1, I've been getting this message when rebooting after installing KB2685811 ("Update for Kernel-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems"): "Failure configuring Windows update". All updates from last Tuesday (13/Nov/2012) were installed correctly, only this one fails.

I tried...

Rebooting, F8 and then using repair. It detected no errors.

Installing the patch with the antivirus (Avira free) disabled, which changed nothing.

Downloading the update manually and installing it. Made no difference.

Installing KB947821, found here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858

I then found a file I had downloaded yesterday (can't remember where from) called windowsupdate.diagcab

I ran it and it detected 2 errors:

[a] Potential Windows update database error detected (0x80070002)

[b] Problem with Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

I eventually solved [a] and [b] with MicrosoftFixit50202.msi, but not the original problem. I still get the "Failure configuring Windows update" message after rebooting, once the installation reaches 61%.

There were a couple of other things I did, but I can't remember exactly what they were...

Any help is appreciated.

I had the same problem and found a solution.

For this update, TEMP file location should be set to default  C:.

I  changed Temp file location from RAM disk to C:\ for this update and it worked.  Thereafter I changed the Temp file location back to RAM disk.

May I know which ramdisk software you're using? I'd like to try it out to understand how it interferes with normal Windows Update operation.

System is up - yipee! Was it booting to safe-mode first, the change to %temp%, or just one-more reboot? Just happy the system is up and running. MS you owe me 2 hours of my life back.

Wei, thanks for your help on this. I have just enough knowledge to screw things up really badly (as evidenced by my just deleting 1000's of vacation/family pictures thinking I was backing them up on Carbonite). I am still struggling to copy my cbs.log to send to you and am worried that I'd do something bad if I tried the WMI Depository trick. I followed lldaedalusll instructions to change the security settings on the cbs log and I still get denied access. What are the "real" risks to trying the WMI option? Also, since you've seemed to also narrow down that anti-virus software may be a cause, please note I have McAfee Virus Scan 15.6 (last updated 11/27/12) running. I contacted and spoke with McAfee via chat two days ago to see if they had heard of any conflicts and they said no.

Do you foresee an update to this update or do I need to take a plunge into doing something I'm nervous to do in an attempt to try and fix this?

Frustrated - did MS put out a bad hotfix?

Shutdown to install updates last night. Restarted this morning and my Win7Pro system is hanging shortly after restarting. Tried 2 hard reboots and it still hangs.

Windows Update will not start, so I haven't been able to get any additional updates.

    Booted into safe-mode with networking to get this far. Ran the troubleshooting applet and it found;

[a] Potential Windows update database error detected (0x80070002)

[b] Problem with Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

    No solution was offered.

Found this thread and it sounds like it may be the problem. Norton 360 will not start - so I don't know if it is current. EventLog is full of SCM failures to start services - some device related. My %temp% is set to C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\Temp - will try changing that.

    Wish me luck!
