I cannot update apps. It returns several error codes. Among them are 0x80246007, 0x80240002, 0x80073cff. I have already tried running scf/scannow, but it didn't find any file errors. Can anyone help me fix this? Thanks in advance!

Note:

  1. I have no 3rd party antivirus software installed.
  2. Several apps reach 80-95% before download/install failure.
  3. Did an in-place update from Win 7, using the Web installer.

Hi KendallSholtess,

Thank you for choosing Windows 8 and thanks for providing us an opportunity to assist you.

As per the description provided I understand that you are unable to perform app update, it would be grateful if you can reply to this question in order to assist you further.

Have you made any changes to the computer to this issue?

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it helps.

Method 1:

I would suggest you to run the Windows update troubleshooter and check if it helps.

a)    Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.

b)    Type troubleshooter in the search box and then press enter.

c)    Select Troubleshooting. Click on view **** all ****and select Windows Update and follow the on-screen instructions.

Method 2:

Perform a clean boot and check if you are able to install the update.

Clean Boot will check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.

Follow these steps to start the computer in clean boot.

Step 1:

a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

c) Click the ‘Boot’ tab and uncheck ‘Safe Boot’ option.

d) On the ‘General’ tab, click to select the option ‘Selective startup’, and then click to clear the option Load startup items check box.

e) On the ‘Services’ tab, click to select the ‘Hide all Microsoft services’ check box, and then click ‘Disable all’.

f) On the ‘Startup’ tab, click ‘Open Task Manager’. In the Task Manager window under startup tab, right click on each startup item which are enabled and select ‘Disable’.

g) Click ‘OK’, and then click Restart.

Step 2: Enable half of the services

a. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.

b. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.

c. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.

d. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.

Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Startup Item list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

Step 6: Resolve the problem

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.

Step 7:

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to boot to normal startup.

a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

c) On the ‘General’ tab, click the ‘Normal Startup’ option, and then click ‘OK’.

d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click ‘Restart’.

I get the same error after I download it the latest build for Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview 10049.

this problem occurs with windows 10 build 10049 and I have the potential solution  searching for a solution to this problem and i found a very simple way to remedy the mail and calendar /people app failing to update and other apps

1.open windows power shell  in administrator

  1. enter the following command  Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like “*windowscommunicationsapps*”} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online
  2. reinstall the app from the store (green tile NOT BETA)

hope this helps:)

I have a Microsoft email account and nothing in this thread worked for me...I got tired of the troubleshooting so I had to install it anew with a clean install. Now everything is working fine.

Those errors, all of them, are tied to the fact that you might be not using a Microsoft Account in your computer.

    You must be logged-in into Windows 8 with a @Hotmail.com, @Outlook.com, @Live.com, @msn.com, etc.

(NO! @gmail.com, @yahoo.com or @[insert-your-weird-domain] are not going to work)

If you don't have one create one going to this link: Sing up Microsoft Account

    Then do this:

    1. Go to the bottom right side of you screen until you see the Charms Bar.
    2. Click "Settings"
    3. Select at the bottom "Change PC Settings"

    4. Click the "Users" Tab.

    1. If you can see the button "Switch to Microsoft Account" please click it and add your Microsoft Account.
    • If you don't see this button, at the bottom of this page there will be a "+" button under "Add User". Click it and add your Microsoft Account.
    1. Now sing out of your current account (Go to Start Screen click your name and select "Sing out")
    2. Sing in with the new account.

    Try to download/install/update Apps again.

Note: If after doing this some apps can't be updated (This does not include default Windows 8 Apps), uninstall them and install them manually again. They shouldn't fail.

    Regards,

Just want to add this information.

I too had difficulty installing/updating apps because of the account issue. Once I log in to my live.com account (had a WP7 device before), I can download and update the apps... With one big but though, I have to download one by one, can't multi download all the apps at once. Even then, some apps still got stuck and I have to cancel and restart the download. I don't know if Microsoft server is too busy or something, but in a nutshell:

    • Use live.com account.
    • Make sure no background app running or using internet bandwidth (this is the superstitious step).
    • Download or update apps one by one.
    • If an app stuck on download progress or just pending or just showing error, cancel the download, go back to the update app page (one page back) and redownload the app.

I had my Windows 8 Pro 15 core apps updated with this steps. Sure the last weather app is harrowing, it kept pending or giving download error, but after repeated steps above, I got it all updated.

The Windows Store is great, but maybe Microsoft need to look on the server side, it's annoying (but liveable) to manually update the apps like that.

I am unable to update or install new apps from Store. Tried the troubleshoot method as mentioned above but came up with no solution and the following problem.

Windows update database error - 0x80070490 - Not Fixed

Windows database components must be repaired - Not Fixed.

I do not want to do a clean install again.  I have done that already just days after installing Windows 8 in my laptop (Dell XPS 502x).  I am getting tired of using Windows 8
