Windows 7 update not working

I have tried all the solutions on the forum but i still have the problem of windows 7 update not working.My computer has been shutdown for 6 weeks as i have been  away. On startup yesterday th probleme  started.

Go into Control Panel >> click on Windows Update item

Click on Change settings (at top left)

under Important updates, click on the down-arrow pull-down

Click on Never check for updates

press OK

Close the Control Panel window

Then Logoff and restart Windows fresh.

When ready, go back into Control Panel >> click on Windows Update item

Click on Change settings (at top left)

under Important updates, click on the down-arrow pull-down

Now make the selection that you need for automatic updates

press OK when done

Close the Control Panel window

Next, do a fresh visit to Windows Update. Kindly advise on results.

If this solves the original issue, kindly click on the MARK It (green) icon.

If this has helped, click on the green Yes  (Helpful) icon as appropos

    As crazy as it sounds, after failing with *every other “solution”, I tried the “Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver update”  listed at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproperf/thread/3b716d4c-fb5f-411b-9aee-38af1c529336/ and  it worked!!!

    Download and install it.

    I have had similar problems since end June 2012. Before the Windows 7 update was dowloading the same files each and everytime, so once installed the next ones I set to hidden and it moved on, but again was repeatedly downloading the same updates.

    I followed the information here and still nothing. In fact it will not check for updates without giving an error:

    Windows could not search for new updates

    An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

    Error(s) found: Code 800730B Windows Update encountered an unknown error

    Searching for information on the error code draws a blank.

    I would be interested to know what will repair this problem. It is clear that some updates from Microsoft can cause more problems than they solve, this seems to have all started after I updated Windows (no idea which update was the issue).

    Another related issue is that I can see when the last updates were applied (successful or failed) but cannot see a list of the installed updates! So if the problem was with a particular update(s) there is no way to remove it.

    Well, thanks a lot for this. After trying all the options found without success, this one made my day.

    My Lenovo T61 running Win 7 Home Premium had the windows update problem. It stopped working after a while with a message saying that the service was not started and that reboot was need. 

    This Intel driver update fianlly solved the issue. Thank you. Alain

    Just wanted to say thank you very much. I discovered that I was not receiving updates during a routine scan by Webroot - my favorite security software package. I had not received an update since APRIL 2012!!! Google offered a link to the MS support page first - something called FixIt. So I tried it. It detected the problem but could not fix it! Great - a catch 22. It kept telling me to restart but did not mention the need to toggle the settings. The link to this page turned up in second place. Of course it should be first.  It turns out that just by turning the scheduled updates setting to NEVER, the system was able to reset itself and updated the Windows Update module. Then it proceeded to load and install 67 more updates! One hour later, I am back to normal. In this scenario, it is important to remember to go back and change your update schedule preference if you want auto update to be active.

    Thank you again. I hope that MS will hire you since they clearly need some good people or at least fix the information it provides with the FixIt page.
