Windows 7 update not working

Go into Control Panel >> click on Windows Update item

Click on Change settings (at top left)

under Important updates, click on the down-arrow pull-down

Click on Never check for updates

press OK

Close the Control Panel window

Then Logoff and restart Windows fresh.

When ready, go back into Control Panel >> click on Windows Update item

Click on Change settings (at top left)

under Important updates, click on the down-arrow pull-down

Now make the selection that you need for automatic updates

press OK when done

Close the Control Panel window

Next, do a fresh visit to Windows Update. Kindly advise on results.

didn't solve my windows update problem either.  actually mine was the opposite. automatic updates installed many security updates on its own, but clicking on windows update and selecting "check for updates" didn't.doesn't work still. all that happens is it keeps cycling looking  for updates for ever until you shut down the computer. when you start up or re-start the PC and open win update the panel reads last checked for updates, of which the answer reads always "Never"

I have run the update trouble shooter and the MS fix it app several times and it has not worked, even though it says the problems were fixed. so i have just not bothered to update the that particular unit ! thanks Microsoft, follows in the usual pattern you guys have of taking a clean stable great  working operating system and lousing it up ,and/or canceling it as you did Windows XP. perhaps you may one day "get it  "that if it ain't broke don't fix it !

and the clincher is, you make us pay for these systems with issues and troubles, then you make us pay for tech support to fix your mistakes and errors ! that is why more and more people are going  to Linux Systems. they are free,stable, and the community support is always ready to help or solve and little problem that comes up for "FREE" as always .

I'm going to try 1 or 2 other work- arounds to fix win update, and if that fails, Aufwiedersehen Microsoft !

I have also been trying to get my Windows update to work on a Windows 7 without success.

I have deleted the temp files, turned the updater off, rebooted, turned on the updater without success.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

The advice worked, but I had to check also something else. In fact, some time ago I set the DNS address from "automatic" to:

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4

I did so because I was having a lot of website not connecting due to DNS error (including google.com).

So, to restore the windows update I did the following:

1. I restored DNS setting to "auto". Changing only this did not recover the Windows Update functinality
2. Rebooted the laptop
3. Opened Control Panel -> Windows Update -> Never check for update
4. Rebooted the laptop

5. Opened again Control Panel -> Windows Update -> Check automatically

It was working and now I am downloading 350 plus Mb of updates !
