I have a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium x86 on Dell Latitude 2120 netbook and first use of Windows Update showed the checking for updates progress bar continuously scrolling and not showing  anything beyond that. I've left it to check for updates overnight while I slept and was still checking for updates the next morning.

I'm trying the steps advised by Maurice N and will update later.

PS.: netbook is currently directly connected to my wifi modem.

    Completely and utterly useless...

Windows 7 Update is broken beyond repair.  MS has tried to patch it with bubblegum and bailing wire to no avail.  Why can't they just fix the POS once and for all, or have they broken it intentionally.  Mine hasn't worked since August of 2015.  No error messages, no nothing.  It won't even create the restore point.  It just sits there say it has download 0% of 0kb.

I have tried all the fixit programs and the stand alone patch that was supposed to fix the update problem.  That didn't even finish.  **** Microsoft, I paid you your money for the software.

    disgruntled user for sure.

Yeah, I just gave up and upgraded both of my systems to W10. Total BS that Windows update is completely borked.
